StencilGirl Guest Designer Patti Sokol

Guest Designer Patti Sokol
Hi, I am very excited to be a guest artist on StencilGirl Talk today.
I met the lovely Mary Beth Shaw at a workshop that I took at The Ink Pad in November of last year.  You can read about it here.
I received 2 really awesome stencils to play with.   The first stencil is mid-century modern elements designed by Kae Pea for StencilGirl Products,  and the larger stencil is by Cecilia Swatton and is called Vases for StencilGirl Products.  I loved the vintage feel that they had and thought that they worked really well together.
I started with a plain piece of 9 X 12 Kraft colored cardstock.  Using the larger stencil first I taped the edges of the card stock down with blue artists tape, and then with a cosmetic sponge I dabbed gesso lightly through the entire stencil and covered the entire page.

Next I added another layer using a combination of Golden High Flow Acrylic and Liquitex Acrylic Ink as a wash so that the Vases in Gesso would peek through.

Next up was the Mid Century Modern stencil and I chose to use certain element in different areas.  I used the cosmetic sponge again but with fluid acrylic in various neutral tones.  After it dried I used some markers to emphasize the different elements.

Now it is time for my collage elements.  I chose a picture that I found in a magazine.  Instead of just gluing that down I scanned the image and printed it on Kraft colored tissue paper.  I wanted to see the image but also be able to see through the image to the stenciling underneath.  I taped the tissue paper down to copy paper so it fed through my printer better.

I reversed the image and added some color using Tombow markers.  I glued it down with matte medium and allowed it to dry.  I added some definition with a white gel pen.
I added a dictionary definition of vintage with matte medium to a manila office tag and glued it down to my page with matte medium.  I used Distress Ink in Vintage Photo to 'age' the ephemera.  I also used a Tombow marker the hit the edges of the tag for more definition.

And for the final touch I used the adorable Thicker letters from American Craft to spell out Vintage.

And here is the final version of my piece:

Here is a little about Patti and where you can find her:
I have pursued creative passions for most of my life, from designing clothing and accessories to working as a television costume designer to simply painting and sketching in my spare time.
A few years ago I was inspired to start creating art journals from all of the ephemera that I have collected from my travels and memorabilia from my children’s various activities.
I love that there are no rules. No mistakes and no right or wrong way to do this. I find it liberating and inspiring. And I love to get messy while making my journals.
I am Mom to two beautiful children and one adorable mostly trained puppy and wife to my best friend of 25 years. I live in sunny Miami Beach.
I am available to help you design any creative project or product.  If you are interested in please contact me by email to discuss in detail.

  5. I really love what you did with that 9"X12" Vases stencil of mine -- you found a way to use it that is not only beautiful but also a lot more creative than any of the ways I've come up with so far. Thank you for choosing to use that stencil!

  6. Gorgeous page!!! I love that you used kraft for the base... it gave it a nice earthy tone to the piece. And Holy Cow... I didn't know you could print onto tissue paper... thank you so much for sharing that info and the tip about taping it down. Wow.. my mind is blown with that new information....LOL. I love how you can see the vases through it on your page.
