Art Journal Page with March Stencil Club Stencils

Hi everyone, it's Jessica Sporn here today to share an art journal page I made using the new exclusive March StencilClub stencils designed by the StencilGirl herself, Mary Beth Shaw.

I love doing my art journaling in old books.  I had a book of pattern photography and history, and the patterns in the March stencils were perfect to begin altering this book.
I opened to the first full spread and applied a thin layer of white gesso.  Then, using black fluid acrylic paint and my liner brush, I painted a long wandering line, and then doodled around it.

I pulled out some collage materials and applied them using matte medium.  Then I used Pyrrole Red paint with a dry brush, and Titan Buff paint to integrate the collage materials with the page.

Then I started playing with the stencils, adding them to the conversation between the paints and the collage.  When I stepped away from my journal and then came back to it, the spread had an Asian feel to it.  I remembered a beautiful handmade card my daughter bought for me on her recent visit to Seoul, South Korea.  I cut out the hanbok, and adhered it to my journal using Regular Gel (Matte).  The addition of this element prompted me to add fluid acrylics in Indian Yellow Hue, Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, and Green Gold to my page.  It looked like this:

As I worked on this spread, the patterns in the March stencils reminded me of planets and the passage of time.  The traditional South Korean dress also reminded me of changing times, the old transforming into the new.  I thought about what causes us to change and shift our perceptions.  Usually, a traumatic event - the early death of a loved one, an accident, losing an opportunity - is required before we are able to look at life in a different way.  And so I added these words:

Thanks so much for stopping by!  Can't wait to see what you do with the March Stencil Club stencils!
