Art Journal: Altering the Cover

Hi, Mary Nasser here!
I’ve been having fun with Seth Apter’s new stencil designs
both inside and outside my art journals!
Today, I’m sharing my newest art journal cover I painted with Seth Apter's
NEW Alphabet Drips and Number Drips!
First, I opened my journal so I could paint the front, back and spine all at once.
I began by putting blue painter’s tape over the elastic band to keep it clean,
then brushed gray gesso over the entire cover of my small Dylusions journal.
Once the gray gesso dried, I incorporated techniques I learned from Seth Apter in 52 Card Pick Up.
I took this workshop with Mary Beth Shaw at Ephemera Paducah in May 2016.
If you ever get the chance to take this class, DO IT! It's still one of my favorite workshops of all time.
If you don't have the chance to take this workshop with Seth in person, he also teaches this method in
his DVD, Card Play: Mixed-Media for Small Works of Art.
Using some of my favorite translucent and opaque colors of PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics:
·         Captain Peacock
·         South Pacific
·         Mermaid
·         Caribbean Sea
·         Inky Pool
·         Snowflake
·         Midnight
I scraped, smeared, stamped and stenciled!
I used plastic cards, a palette knife, my fingers, a brayer, and sponges to apply paint!
I pounced white gesso through these stencils, too, to add more light values and contrast.
And I stenciled MY STORY in heavy body black acrylic, then outlined with my white pen.
I am really happy with the results and look forward to filling this journal in 2017!
Not only do I love the lettering and numbers Seth Apter designed,
but also the fabulous patterns and marks in these stencils, too!

Happy stenciling and art journaling!
