Stencils aren't just for Art Journaling

Hi!  Tina here today with my latest Creative Team project.  If you have been following me, you know that I LOVE using stencils in all of my creative projects.  Stencils are so versatile and are for so much more than the traditional journal page or canvas.  They can also be used for creating dimensional art, perfect for home or studio display.

Using one of my favorite {new} stencils by Andrew Borloz, 'Kunst Puppen Two Females', I'll show you how to make your very own dimensional art.

Prep the surface of a heavy chipboard or cardboard rectangle.  I used another {new} favorite, Gold Gesso by Daniel Smith for my first layer.

Once dry, fill in stenciled areas with your medium of choice.  I am using Art Graf water-soluble discs. I just love the yummy, vintage colors.

While the stencil is still in place, activate the pigment with water and a paintbrush.  The colors explode with vibrancy.

No worries if the pigment seeps under the edge.  We call these 'happy mistakes' and embrace the process. Continue to add layers to the image and background until happy with the look.  You can also add crackle paint to the painted image for even more vintage deliciousness.

Outline the image with a white or black pen.  We will use this as a guide for our stitching.  Using an awl, poke holes where you outlined the image with a pen.  Grab a coordinating color of embroidery floss and stitch the entire image.

Once you have stitched the image, add your favorite embellishments to make your piece dimensional.  Wings, appendages, findings, and crowns are the perfect addition.

A wall hanging isn't complete with dangles and drops.  Add handmade clay beads for the perfect touch!

I hope my project has you thinking of the million ways to use your favorite StencilGirl stencils in un-traditional ways.  The possibilities are endless!

Thank you for stopping by!  Have a great day.

Tina
