Seth Apter: Art Journaling with StencilGirl Stencils!

Hi, all. Seth Apter here. Excited to be posting on StencilGirl Talk today! I am sharing a project that combines two of my favorite art activities: journaling and stenciling!

My current journal is a ring-bound, 9 x 12 inch book with 140lb watercolor paper. I have covered every page with black gesso and always keep this journal by my side when I am arting. Whenever I have leftover paint or feel the need to make a creative mess, I do so on one of the pages.

Over time, a background emerges that I have created without any conscious effort. Today’s journal page began that way and looked like this when I pulled out the stencils.

I decided to start my page using several of my newly released stencils from my On the Edge collection: Make it Count and You Got This. These designs were created to be part stencil and part mask, offering a creative twist to the user.

I usually start my pages in a corner and this was no exception. I applied multiple layers of colors of both paint (PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics: Bora Bora, Concrete, Professor Plum) and ink (Imagine Crafts StazOn Midi: Jet Black, Gothic Purple) through portions of both stencils using a sponge. Some detail was added to the surface using a rubber stamp (Spellbinders French Text) and ink as well.

I continued to stencil, using words from Make it Count and design elements from a 4 x 4 inch stencil designed by Mary Beth Shaw as part of her December 2015 StencilGirl Club collection. Again, I layered in stencils using both paint (PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics: Guacamole, Space Cadet, Concrete, Professor Plum) and ink (Imagine Crafts StazOn Midi: Blue Hawaii).

Working my way around the page, I stenciled the word NOW from the mask portion of my The Time stencil and I added some additional swirling designs using Mary Beth Shaw’s 4 x 4 inch stencil from her March 2015 StencilGirl Club collection.  I continued to use the same paint and ink colors to create a cohesive page. I also added a bit of extra complexity with my French Text stamp and black ink.

The time came for finishing touches. Using both black and white gel pens, I outlined the stenciled text and some of the designs elements. This technique makes them both pop off the page and integrate into the background at the same time. Some drips were added using Golden High Flow Acrylic paint in Carbon Black. The final step was adding some random splatter using watered-down white gesso.

    1. Give the corner a go Gerrie. It changes the way a page is created.
