September Stencil Club: Building Up Layers

Hi all, Gwen Lafleur here, back again and excited to share a project featuring this month's amazing, exclusive, StencilClub stencils designed by Andrew Borloz.

We've already seen several awesome projects showing just how fun and versatile these stencils are, but hopefully I can share a few more ideas to use when that much anticipated white envelope shows up in your mailbox!

I had so much  fun exploring different ways to use these stencils... the PDF that comes with this month's set is an absolute gold mine of information and ideas and I couldn't wait to play. I decided to use this month's stencils as the basis for a new art journal page.

I really wanted to use the stencils to start building up layers on my page as a frame for my photo. I started out with a quick coat of gesso and then some Yellow Green fluid acrylic paint. Once that was dry, I used ink pads and my blending tools to start adding pattern on top.

You can see how the different sized stencils work so well with each other. I started using the 6x6 to put down my initial row, then used it again to mask while I added detail with the 4x4.

Then you can see a few rows later how the 6x6 and the 9x12 stencil work together so you can keep adding layers and details.

Above you can see what it looked like after I finished stenciling and added my photo (I printed it out on a transparency, cut a hole in the page, and adhered it to the back.) You could leave it at this point - the stencils give so much depth and detail on their own, but I decided to add some more layers on that base and really make the design my own.

Above, you can see how I outlined the shapes with a black pen to highlight the details and make it pop. From there, all I had to do was add some Liquid Pearls along with a title and some journaling. And here it is - the final page with lots and lots of layers.

Hope you enjoyed today's project as much as I enjoyed making it!
