Stenciling Ideas

Hi! Mary Nasser here today to show you what I did with the EXCLUSIVE
April 2014 StencilClub stencils designed by Carolyn Dube!

When I saw these amazing stencil designs,
I immediately thought of inventions (electricity, light bulbs, and the printing press), ideas, creativity and time.

I knew I wanted to make a painting layering all these stencils for my nephew
to encourage his ideas, inventive and creative qualities, too!

First, I adhered a nautical map with gel medium to a 9” x 12” stretched canvas.

The numbers and radial design in this map reminded me of clock faces.

After letting this dry over night, I placed the 9” x 12” stencil directly on the painting,
and with an ink sweeper pounced on copper heavy body acrylic.

Then I used light gold heavy body acrylic, an ink sweeper and the 6” x 6”  stencil
to pounce in the shapes of the three light bulbs.

I used a flat brush and several layers of light gold paint to fill in the shapes completely.

After this dried, I pounced bronze acrylic through the light bulbs stencil onto the gold light bulb shapes.

Then I used Scotch-Blue Painter's Tape for delicate surfaces to make guidelines for the heights of the letters.

My itty-bitty sponge dauber was perfect for stenciling in each letter from the 4” x 4” mini stencil
with green blue heavy body acrylic.

My last step was adding on some metal arrows and clock face stickers!

Below is a detail of the painting:

I hope you have have fun playing with your StencilClub stencils, too!

Also, I'd love for you to visit my blog where I've got a review of Mary Beth Shaw's
Mixed Media Sampler Journal DVD and am giving away a copy of the DVD, too!

    1. Thank you, Glenda! I gather maps wherever I can find them, and some are gifted to me.
This is actually a nautical map from my visit to the Big Island of Hawaii.
I also find maps at used book sales and antique stores.
If you click the ink sweeper link above, it will take you to an image of it at JoAnn's. I usually buy them here on sale.
Mary Beth Shaw first introduced me to the ink sweeper as a stenciling tool and writes about it in her book Stencil Girl. :) Hope that helps! Can't wait to see what you make!

  6. It amazes me how you can incorporate a map into every piece you make. And the circles on this map were PERFECT to use with the clock stencil. Amazing idea and work. Love it.
