Stencils and the Kitchen Sink

Hi all, Diana Trout here today for StencilGirl. I went into this project with no real plan.
I wanted to experiment with Ranger Texture Paste, Gesso, ColorBurst pigments and STENCILS.
I chose to play with Lizzie Mayne's Corrugated Lines, Maria McGuire's Doodle It Bigger
and Carolyn Dube's Wall of Words and Uplifting Words stencils.

I have loads of experience with art projects taking unexpected turns, so I applied a couple of my standard strategies and came out with a great prompt for my art journal and a couple of cards.

Texture pastes or grounds can be colored with a spot of dye ink and I’ve been itching to try tinting them with the pigment powder. This is a good choice because it won’t water the paste or ground (or gesso) down.
I found that the tinted grounds dried pretty close to the wet color.

For my post for StencilGirl, I chose a couple of my favorite stencils from StencilGirl: the arched cobblestones remind me of Italy and who doesn’t love a doodle sunburst?

I enjoy exploring altered substrate surfaces to build layers of patterns. Sticking to analogous (neighboring colors) is a wise choice so you don’t wind up with mud. You can use any kind of acrylic paints. I also used Golden Glazing Medium (matte). This creates sheer colors.

If you practice making mud by mixing complementary colors, it can be beautiful. Look at the neutrals above the quote in the picture below that I got from mixing purple into yellow.

You can see a close up of the layers from another piece I was playing with. The Squares and Circles stencil was stenciled using gel medium. I let that dry before stenciling the sunburst from the Shattered Stencil.

The gel medium really alters the way the paint soaks into the paper as you can see below. The untreated area looks like grout giving a mosaic look to the background. Here I used the Fishscale Brick Stencil.

I added some drippy paint and then some gold ink to finish things up. As usual, I didn’t know where this page was leading me until I came to the collage part. 

I picked a quote that appealed to me.
