Stencil FUNdamental Using Lots of Color

Carolyn Dube here from aColorfulJourney.com with another FUNdamental video.  It's all about getting lots and lots of color on one stencil without having to mask a thing.

Andrea Matus DeMeng's Dia de los Muertos Mask Stencil was the perfect stencil adding color.  Dia de los Muertos.  Not sure what that is?  It the Day of the Dead.  Click here to find out more about it on Wikipedia.

Technical issues with the video at the moment...repair technicians are working diligently....thanks for your patience...

Stencil Video FUNdamental

Using Parts of a StencilGirl Products Stencil

I like big stencils.  The kind that fill a page call to me like Maria McGuire's Butterfly stencil.   This big wonderful stencil has more to offer than just a butterfly.  It is like having a whole bunch of smaller stencils.  The details of the design are elements that can be used all by themselves.

The two tags above are made from the Butterfly stencil. Yes, this butterfly stencil.

By taking one small part of it and repeating it I get a completely different look than if I used the whole stencil.

Here's a quick FUNdamental video showing how I used paint with only parts of the stencil.

Stop back on Thursday because Janet Joehlin will be showing how she used markers to create patterns with part of this stencil in her awesome journal!

Stencil FUNdamentals show you fun ways to get started with stencils.  Today, I am playing with Wood Icing and Jane LaFazio's Pods stencil. This is a wonderfully intricate stencil and it works fabulously with Wood Icing!

What's Wood Icing

Here's how Mary Beth describes it...
"The best texture product I have ever used.  I use it on paper, canvas, clayboard and wood substrates.  It is easy to apply with a palette knife.  You can paint it, stain it, glaze it, carve it.  You can even paint into it while it's still wet.  You can do encaustic on top of it after it has dried.  This one texture product fulfills a multitude of needs."

Here's my play session with wood icing.

You can watch it on YouTube at Wood Icing and a Stencil FUNdamental

Here's a video by Mary Beth about wood icing.

You can watch it on YouTube at Wood Icing Demo

Now it's your turn to play!

Stencil FUNdamental with Paint

Stencil FUNdamentals shows you fun ways to get started with stencils.  Today I am playing with acrylic paint and Intersecting Circle Brick by Lizzie Mayne.

2 slightly different looks depending on how you use the brush.
On the left, a quick juicy paint brush of paint swished back and forth.
On the right, a drier brush pounced up and down.

Mixing 2 colors of paint directly on the stencil for subtle variation.

Not very subtle here- a rainbow of color!

I used acrylic paint but the skies the limit with different mediums you can use with a stencil!
Now it is your turn to play!

Stencil FUNdamentals with Spray Inks

Stencil FUNdamentals shows you fun ways to get started with stencils.

You can also watch on YouTube at  spray ink Stencil FUNdamentals.

I'm playing with Terri Stegmiller's Garden Swirl stencil in a spiral bound journal.  I used Dylusions spray inks here but stencils work with any spray ink.
When I spray from about 12" away the color is lighter and lines are very crisp. Love the big splots of ink from my bottle.

When I spray up close the ink puddles more and randomly runs under the stencil in places. This gives it such a different feeling than the one above.

You can use more than 1 color at a time with a stencil too!  Here I used 3.

You can get so many different looks from one stencil with spray inks!
Now it's your turn to play!  Grab a stencil and some spray inks and have fun!

I'm putting together the next Stenciling FUNdamental and there are so many possibilites.  Let me know in the comments what FUNdamantal supply would you like me to use in the next videos!

Stop back on Wednesday, Leslie Tucker Jenison will be here with another tutorial!
