StencilGirl StencilClub January 2014 Inspiration!

Hi! Mary Nasser here today to show you what I did with the EXCLUSIVE
January 2014 StencilClub stencils designed by Jessica Sporn!
Inspired by Alisa Burke’s recent blog post on embellishing sleeves with fabric spray, puff paint and fabric scraps,
I wanted to give this a whirl with stencils and gesso!

Once I saw the January 2014 StencilClub stencils, I knew immediately that I wanted to embellish my sleeves
using the 9" x 12" stencil with all its lovely swirls and flourishes!

I started out with an inexpensive, long-sleeved black t-shirt, and cut cardboard the approximate width of the forearms.

I inserted the cardboard I’d cut into the sleeves, taped the stencil on the sleeve...

...and pounced away with my ink sweeper and gesso!

Once the gesso dried, I heat-set it by putting it in the dryer (though any time I get gesso on my clothes, it doesn't wash out anyway!).

Looking forward to wearing this to Mary Beth Shaw's book-signing on January 18th!

    1. Thanks, Corrine. Felt a little crazy at first to be putting gesso on my shirt sleeves on purpose! lol!
But I like the white against the black, too. And those ink sweepers are my fave!

  9. Mary, This is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!! Question, does the gesso cause the shirt to get stiff where it is put on, and or does it soften with washing?

  10. oh dear Mary - I think you've started a trend! love the sleeves - never ever would have thought to use gesso! I've used Jaquard's and shaving foam w/inks and stencils... but this looks so much easier with gesso!

  14. LOVE this!!! Did you have any problem getting the pattern to match up as you went around the sleeve??

    1. Great question! I used the stencil as a guide to match the pattern as I went around the sleeve and didn't have any problems. :) Because the width of each sleeve wasn't quite twice the width of the stencil, I used parts of the stencil to add pattern in places, too.

  18. Hi

Wow, this looks amazing! Great tutorial too with clear photos.
Unfortunately though it is not a valid entry in The Make It Monday linky party. To be a valid entry it must be a paper craft project.

    Kind regards

    Michelle :o)
