Art Journal Pages with the October StencilGirl StencilClub Exclusive Stencils

Hi all, this is Gwen, here today to share some art journal pages I made using this month's amazing, exclusive StencilClub stencils. I think every month so far has been my new favorite set of club stencils, and this month is no exception. When I first opened the envelope, my jaw dropped... I LOVE these stencils! Super fun and versatile. I immediately started on several different sets of art journal pages, and I have two of them to share with you today.

The spread on the left is done in an old book I found - it's all about fractals and physics and has some cool pages to work on top of. I started playing around and it started to feel to me like an abstract underwater scene, so I just went with it... I layered a base of acrylic paint and then used more paint with the stencils to build up layers on top. I used just the center section of the 6x6 stencil to get that vertical border in the middle.

The second page was intended to be an experiment and then it unintentionally morphed into another spread.  I started by taking the 6x6 stencil and following Traci Bautista's tutorial in her latest book Printmaking Unleashed, to create my own silk screen by securing the stencil to the hoop and filling in the holes in the stencil with Mod Podge to transfer the design to my fabric.

This way I get the negative of the design... I was thrilled with how it turned out, and I'll be making more of these! So then I just kept layering screen prints over top of the background that was done with the 9x12 stencil and some stamping then added some dots on top from the 4x4 stencil (that's another one that's going to get a ton of use!)

And a little close-up of the final page so you can get a better idea of how the screen printing looks:

These stencils are such cool designs, and they work together so well, yet they also have infinite possibilities used individually. I know I'll be using them regularly, and I can't wait to see what amazing art everyone makes with these!

Not a member of StencilClub yet? If you sign up by the 15th, these are the stencils you'll get in your first shipment! It's definitely a good month to start if you've been thinking about it ;)

Until next time!

  3. Gotta try that silk screen thing! I am presuming the fabric used was silk screen material!

    1. Hi Nan,
I actually just used a silky fabric that had a loose enough weave that the paint would go through the holes wherever there was no design to block it. I found it in a remnant bin at Joann - not sure exactly what it was. You can use silk or something similar and it should work just fine. Hope that helps!
