Henri Matisse, DecoArt and stencils!

There are always flowers for those who want to see them." ~ Henri Matisse

One of my favorite things to do when looking for inspiration in my art is to study the masters.  Van Gogh, Matisse, Klimt and Chagall are a few of my favorite inspirations.  In fact, I created a Pinterest board of these works to draw from and study.

I like Henri Matisse for his collage work, use of patterns in his paintings and his florals. Today I am going to take one of my pins of Matisse's painting, and show you how I made it my own.

Here is painting by Matisse in 1907 - a pitcher of flowers.

I am going to use this as my spring board for my own painting and also add in pattern which Matisse was well-known for in his works.

I begin by painting a painting a base of Naples yellow on my canvas.  I then sketch out my composition.  Instead of a pitcher, I draw a vase.

I choose a palette of bright, happy colors, similar to the painting.  I used this DecoArts Media Fluid Acrylics pictured below.  Beautiful paints!!!

I paint the first, under layer.  I will paint several layers until I get the "look" I want.

I continue to add to the flowers with more layers of paint.  At times, I mix in some of DecoArt tinting base for variation in color and thickness.

I use the DecoArt Antiquing cream in Patina Green around the background over the yellow.

Time for a stencil! I chose Carolyn Dube's Scribble Scratch Handwriting stencil from StencilGirl because of its random pattern to add some zing to an otherwise formal still life.  I place the stencil over my painting and only paint in where the vase is.

Doesn't it just help that vase pop with sass?

I paint a couple layers around the table and my Matisse-inspired painting is finished!

Here are some close ups.

I hope you enjoyed this post and will find a way to let the masters inspire you in your art journey!  If you would like to hop over to my Facebook Page, blog or Instagram and say hello I'd love to see you there!
