Step-by-Step Mixed Media Canvas with StencilGirl Guest Designer Brigitta Budahazi

Hi Everyone! This is Brigitta Budahazi here again. This is my second post here, on StencilGirl Talk Blog as a Guest Designer. I hope you will like this project.

In this post I will show you how I made this mixed media canvas, using three beautiful stencils from StencilGirl. I really enjoyed the whole process itself. Originally the text of the Wall of Words stencil inspired me to make this home deco. I just wanted to create a piece of art which reminds me to be myself, and be ready to play in any circumstances in life – because in the end it will turn out that all was worth it. I used a 9x9 canvas as a base of my layout, so let’s see how it was put together.

1. First I covered the canvas with some scrap paper I cut out from old books. I put a thin layer of Pentart GelPaste (it is a kind of Gel Medium) on the canvas and one coat onto the top of the papers as well.

2. Then I just picked up a used plastic card and covered the dried layer of papers with a thin coat of white gesso. The one I used called Pentart Primer Paste, which is a heavy type of gesso.

3. Then I mixed an “azure” shade of blue with light blue and light green shades of acrylic paint, because I wanted to match the intensity and the shade of the two colors, the blue and the green. Then, using a sponge brush I put on the two mixtures to the upper and the lower part of the canvas. Before it dried, I used a paper towel to remove some of the paint and lighten its shades a bit.

4. I love this new applicator tool, The Groove, which is perfect to apply acrylic paint - or any other mediums - to a surface through a detailed stencil too. So I applied white acrylic paint and used the inspirational stencil of  Wall of Words Stencil. The best is secure it to the canvas to prevent the stencil to move. Here I used washi tape.

5. I stenciled some flowers using Tropical Floral Stencil, black acrylic paint and the Groove again, cut them out and glue them with Pentart Media Glue to the lower part of the canvas.

6. At this point I just got an idea to paint some birds to the “sky”, the upper part of the canvas. I used an art knife and black acrylic paint, and making a texture with the knife, I painted the swallows using the Swallows Stencil.

7. Then the picture needed some bright colors – so I colored the petals with oil pastels. I used oil pastels for shading the flowers, the stems and the birds too.

8. I love making contrast on my layouts mixing glitter with matte mediums, so – using my fingertips – I applied green and blue Pentart Glitter paste here and there.

9. I also love making doodles around the shapes and to the edges, so, with a Sakura Gel Pen I decorated the layout.

10. The last step before the final one was to give it a bit of an antique look. I applied Distress Ink--Walnut to the edges and made some contrast with white gel pen doodling (not showed on the picture).

11. Finally I added the little title: it’s worth it – and my new mixed media canvas layout was ready to be placed on the wall.

It's a pretty easy project, with only a few products to use. So do not hesitate to try this out.

Thank you so much for the opportunity. I am so glad and proud that I could share my tips with you, here on StencilGirl Talk. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have regarding this project. You can contact me through my blog or on Facebook.
