StencilGirl Guest Artist Mary Freeman

Welcome to StencilGirl Guest Artist Mary Freeman

Thank you, StencilGirl, for asking me to share a journal spread using a few of StencilGirl’s amazing stencils.  I chose several fabulous stencils created by Seth Apter.  I was drawn to the words, style of lettering and all the wonderful marks and doodles.

I am using Sabrina Ward Harrison’s book, “The Story is Happening” as my journal.  I began this spread as I usually do by adding swipes of color to the pages, covering up and leaving some things exposed.  I may end up covering much of it as I go, and the color I began with may change completely.

I added some scribbles and dripped black on the left hand side of my spread.  I smeared the ink and then I wiped it off with a baby wipe, leaving cool smears of splotchy ink.  Pages can go through an ugly messy stage, all part of life.  I really liked the look of the spread at this stage, but I knew I had a long way to go and that it would probably change quite a bit in the process.

I like to bury things in my pages.  So I began to use Seth’s stencils to add words to do that. I also began to write thoughts and feelings that will most likely get covered up…all a part of my process.

I added more paint layers, and as you can see, more things got covered up.  I also added some drips of white ink.

I added some collage images.  They may stay or go.

Well the collage image on the right side of the spread went…I was just not feeling it.  I also added my beloved black paint.  I always, well most always, use black on my pages.

I added more collage images on the left and right side of the spread.  I also added some masking tape, and I began to add lettering and journaling with my hand as well as the words inside out from one of Seth’s stencils.

I continued adding marks and words with Seth’s stencils. (the black marks in the upper middle, white marks left of bottom center, doodle marks bottom right as well as the words, secrets, inside out, story and large unfinished are from Seth’s stencils).  I drew a bit and did some more journaling.  As you can see I covered up the collage elements on the right side of the spread, and covered up the green that I started with.  Hardly anything from the first image of this spread stayed the same.  Most of my pages are created with layer after layer.  While the earlier layers are no longer visible, they are still there as are the layers and stories of our lives.
I also spelled story (s) wrong… well, mistakes happen.  I could fix it, but I am partial to the imperfect so I’m leaving it.

  4. Yes, we do have to learn to live with unfinished artworks. It's annoying until we come to accept it.
