Planner Stencils in my Moleskine with Anna Friesen

Hi, there! It's Anna here today to show you how I use the new(ish) planner stencils in my artsy planner!

I am part of the Life Documented 2017 Facebook Group, a spin-off from the last three years of The Documented Life Project.

This project has three parts:
1. Decorate the "tip-in". (see below, right side.) We will use two pieces, one for the front and back.
2. Decorate the two-page spread of the Moleskine
3. Create a little flip for the inside.

A little flap attached with washi on the inside page.

Stencils I will use:

Planner Words 4 Stencil by Mary Beth Shaw Planner Spiral Notes 4 Stencil by Mary Beth Shaw
Planner Lines 4 Stencil by Mary Beth ShawPlanner Geo 4 Stencil by Mary Beth Shaw

Planner Lines 6 Stencil by Mary beth Shaw

Thorny Stencil by Terri Stegmiller

Blooming Where Planted Stencil by Cecilia Swatton

I start by painting a few backgrounds.

For the first one:
1. Tear a page out of an old book, cover it with a chartreuse colour paint using a paint brayer.
2. Lay down the 9x12 Web Stencil, and pounce some black in with the chartreuse using a cosmetic sponge.
3. Allow some areas to be darker than others. The image does not need to be precise. If you find the colour too even, remove some colour with a baby wipe while stencil is still down.

Now the Week 8 prompt in Life Documented 2017, is to use a scrap piece of paper, and that is what I will do here. To demonstrate this, the artist shows how you strengthen any paper to make it suitable for mixed media. This is exactly what I will do here:

Use a scrap piece of copy paper with a dark image which covers the whole page.
1. Apply a light pink paint with a paint brayer and let dry.
2. Cover it with a second colour - a bright pink.
3. While still wet, crumple painted paper into a ball, straighten it out, crumple it again, make it semi-flat and let it dry.

 4. Add in some spots of pink with brayer to places, which adds a bit more detail.
The colours look deeper in real life, but I just could not capture it in my camera lens!

Add in some stenciled detail in one section of the paper with the Thorny stencil. It is now that I discover I can get paint down fast with a foam paint roller.

Next, comes a fun substrate: a canvas paper pad I found at Winners on clearance. It boasts pre-gessoed canvas!

I cover one with browns and greys, rubbing away some colour with wipes.

Cut apart the two papers in different-sized rectangles in different sizes to fit your canvas. Size doesn't really matter, as we'll be cutting everything down.
Adhere to greyed canvas with matte medium.
Smudge the area where the purple and yellow meet with purple paint.
Add in gesso smudges.
Add more purple on top.
Mix in black to darken. I am thinking shadows here.

When dry, place Blooming Where Planted stencil on the dark area.
Rub paint away vigorously through stencil with wet wipe, leaving much of the paint on the edges of the stencil lines.

Stencil in black/grey paint with the January 2017 6x6.   (I didn't actually end up using this piece of the canvas in the end, but it did give me the idea on how to decorate the Moleskine planner pages.)

I cut this piece apart and sew around all the edges messily, including that purple piece of paper that will serve as the other side of the tip-in. I'll show you more photos later.

Cut down to the size of the Moleskine page, this piece will star as my "tip-in".

I pause to show you my messy workspace...:)

Moleskine prep:

Now we want to add these pieces to the Moleskine.
To prepare it, I gesso both pages first.

With foam roller, cover both pages with grey paint (I use Liquitex Basics Neutral Gray Value 5)

Stencil in with black paint using the 6x6 January 2017club stencil.
Next, I mix in some Acrylic Glazing Liquid in with the grey paint and spread paint over the whole spread.
I "fade" away the black into grey to the left, by adding in some more grey/glaze combo lightly. Let dry completely.

Draw in purple lines with Sharpie paint marker, marking off seven slots for seven days.

I take some kraft circle stickers and paint them pink. The pink does not show up cleanly, so I apply white while pink is still wet, leaving it a light pink.

Take a ruler and line up the circles along the left edges, overlapping slightly. Cut off excess.

Apply pink paint again with sponge with the Planner Geo 4 stencil, using the circle part.

With Planner Words 4, stencil in the numbers with black.

Doodle in more details with paint markers.

Same stencil for Monday to Sunday.

I sew the crinkled purple page to the canvas substrate (which I painted black), with messy stitches, then sew it to the Moleskine page.

I don't have a photo of me adding some yummy Blooming Where Planted to the crinkly paper, but you can see the subtle effect below.

Now I sew around the edges of the little flap piece, leftovers of the purple crinkly paper I want to include.
Stencil in lines with the Planner Spiral Notes 4  messily adding blacks and pinks with my fingers as well.

With Planner Lines 4, stencil in details with white over the light grey/dark grey geometric pattern.

Same stencil, add the little line of flowers to the day lines on left side of Moleskine pages. Mask off the line for more ease of stenciling if you desire.

And here we are, finished, ready to fill in my days!!

Thanks so much for stopping by to see! I hope you get inspired by this project to see your stencils in a new way!

Feel free to join us over at the Life Documented 2017 Facebook Group! :)
