There's a Party in the House-Creating Art with Many Stencil Designs

Hi everyone. This is Debi Adams and I say, there's a party in this house! At least when I created this piece, I tried to get a LOT of people together, stencil-wise. I found it super fun and very experimental. And guess what, everyone got along! Love it.

Here's a random sampling of stencils with random intentions. Honestly, I wanted to go out of my coloring box and I had a blast. Have you ever tried picking different colors or designs that weren't in your normal wheelhouse? I know I have said that often enough but in order to grow, you have to do some stretching.

What are your go-to colors? Mine are always aqua and brown and sometimes navy. Not this time.  I chose bright. Yes, Mary Beth, I heard you in the StencilGirl and Friends event. Go bold then you can tone it down.

Since the StencilGirl Design Team just did a blog hop with alcohol inks, I decided to continue with them and incorporate distress ink as well. I applied gesso first to my mixed media paper then went to town with the inks. I spilled them, dropped them and spread them around. Some small pieces of mixed media paper were watercolored using inks. Others were gessoed in black. This entire piece was created with different sizes of paper. It seemed less intimidating to play in a small area rather than tackle an entire 8" x 10" sheet but one day, I will tackle that beast too!  Here's the entire completed project...

In this case I stayed bright but added in some colors to change the domination.
And the scribble and mark making, yes, I learned that too!

I know that thicker stencils can emboss...so I added them here using Tammy's Polka Party stencils.  I used a light table to see where to use the stylus. (If I had a smaller substrate, I could have used a die-cut machine and embossed them and it would have been so much quicker.) Oh btw, my favorite light table ever, and I was NOT paid to say this, is a Huion LED Light Pad!  The best.

Here I am embossing the back side of the paper with the stencil underneath it and next to the glass top.

And to Mary Beth, this should be a staple I say! Love this little Quilted doo-dah! One of my favorite things to do is to add dimension to a piece and this Quilt stencil was perfect. I used foam dots to pop it up. I raised the rectangular-shaped, orange piece and the feather, as well. The interest they create makes me happy.

And of course, every art piece needs a hidden message or some sort of subliminal sentiment, well at least I think so!

I decided my signature on every piece of my art is going to be string. Black string if it works. It think it did here. Kinda let it do it's own thing. Art is so fun. You can be the master of it or it can take off on it's own agenda. I say, whatever works. Oh, and notice I also embossed the starburst in the pink area. I went back over it with the blending tool and raspberry ink.

Something about this feather... For me, every art piece needs a background, a focal point and a message. In this case, the feather was the focal point. I stenciled it in black ink on white mixed media paper then went back in using a blending tool with Picked Raspberry and Sunset Orange distress ink and colored the white areas in. I added little markings using the Starlight stencil.

Stitching never hurts. Didn't need a lot of it.  I used it as a marking of sorts, in order to get a bit of black around the edges.

Just for the heck of it, I added some of Seth Apter's latest die-cuts called Strands. Of course, mark making was required.

And this brings us full circle. I hope you enjoyed today's project but most importantly, I hope that you will take it with you and begin creating your own style by getting a little uncomfortable.

XO,

Debi
