My favorite stencil ever is Art Deco Wallpaper by Nathalie Kalbach!
I’ve used it on tribal art journal pages, art deco masterpieces, and even a wood-burned ukulele!
This stencil has been bent, smashed, stained, and generally beaten up by all of my artistic endeavors…
and it’s still my first choice for every new art project!

However, I wanted to push myself further, so I ordered a few more art deco stencils and got to work.
I wanted to try creating with dimension for this canvas,
using foam mounting tape to create layers within the piece.
Supplies:

Directions:

Cover a canvas panel with patterned scrapbook paper with a strong adhesive like gel medium.
Fold over the edges for a polished finish.
Water down a small portion of Buttermilk paint and paint over the entire patterned paper.
Place Art Deco Bookplates Stencil over center of canvas
and use a makeup sponge to apply the design with Buttermilk paint.
Outline patterned canvas with Marine Scribble Stick and blend with a water brush and paper towel.

Paint the entire sheet of mixed-media paper or cardstock with Buttermilk paint and let dry completely.
At the edge of the page, stencil the middle design from Art Deco Borders Stencil in Coral Blush paint.
Cut out and set aside.
Using the Marine Scribble Stick, add some details to the border stencil. Wet with a small brush to blend.
Water down Coral Blush and apply a thin layer to certain sections of the border print.

Flapper Girl:
Draw your own or download the clipart and print onto heavy cardstock.
Paint skin tone with Buttermilk.
Fill in dress shape with Coral Blush. Blend Coral Blush with white, then apply to the dress with a craft nib in short strokes. This will give the appearance of fringe or beading on the dress.

Paint in the hair with Burnt Umber. Keep the layers thin so that you can see the original layer of Buttermilk showing through. This will help to add texture to the piece.

Paint headband, then apply Coral Blush and Buttermilk with a craft nib to create the feathers.
Outline entire flapper girl with a Copic Gasenfude Nylon Brush Pen.

Finish by adding some shading to the face, neck, and right arm of the flapper girl with Marine Scribble Stick, then blend with a small brush and dab away excess water with a paper towel.

Trim each line of the sentiment from the page and outline with Blushing Scribble Stick.
To assemble the canvas, back border shape and flapper girl with foam double-stick tape.

Stick down the border stencil in the center of the canvas, then the flapper girl in the corner. Adhere sentiment directly to the canvas in the space next to the flapper girl.
