Inside Happy with Tammy Tutterow

Hello! Tammy Tutterow checking in. Earlier this month I shared a tutorial featuring my Happy Moments Journal that I created for the StencilGirl and Canvas Corp Match Up.  I wanted to revisit it today to share a quick look inside.

When I make mini books and journals, I like to follow a formula for my pages that I use over and over through out the book.  I think it makes creating a book easier and allows me to put the focus on my words and photos.  I also like to try to integrate elements from my cover on the inside pages.

For this journal, I carried the polka dot theme from the cover to the inside by using the same Mini Dots Stencil.  I also brought the polka dots and ticking theme inside with pattern paper.  I introduced a few other favorite stencils that are repeated on the other inside pages: S002 Journal Notes 6 and S054 Your Thoughts 6.

Not Blank Anymore Journal - Carol Baxter

Hello! Carol chiming in now.

What to do with an entirely blank small journal? I started out with Canvas Corp's Naked Journal from 7 Gypsies.

spritzed all the pages of the journal quite randomly with:

L179 Hands stencil

I stenciled in a bunch of hands using Jessica Sporn's stencil, then I looked for the eldest released stencil in my stash.

This is the 4th mini stencil StencilGirl ever produced. Mini Downward Stairs.

For some reason it struck me as dice, not lucky 7s but snake eyes... and as there is ever a song in my head... Do you hear good ol' Mr. Jagger singing, "You got to roll me and call me tumbin' dice"?

My art journal is the result of an afternoon's stenciling. I am sure I will continue to embellish it, but right now, I am going to let it rest.

A couple of newer stencils found their way into the journal too, including Mary Beth Shaw's Random Lace and the Winter Solstice Mini from StencilClub, Roxanne Evans Stout's Ocean Glider, Daniella Woolf's small Guitars and Dancing Lights, Carol Wiebe's Lunar Symbols, and Gwen Lafleur's Ornamental Compass Mask.

"Striving."

"Shining soul, drop on head."

"When the magic begins."

"Sometimes it happens out of sync." (above)

"Cacophony with applause."

"Gamble." (here it is, in the works)

"Everyone's a critic."

Am I my own worst one? That sweet little fish might be upside down. Thank goodness there are no stencil police!

Tip: If you have yet to layer once stencil over another, I highly recommend that you try it! I doubt Mary Beth thought her Random Lace would be used as scales, but I bet she'd be the first to tell you that the use of a stencil is in the eye of the beholder.

"Big laughs."

The Lunar Symbols stencil reminds me of a heart. It also looks like... oh! I can't tell you because now I want to see if I can make it into what I just saw as I am writing this post.

Do you save fortunes you break out of cookies? Apparently Mary Nasser does too. Check out her gorgeous journal cover and appropriate fortune here.

"Art friends share paint." (back cover)

Wise Buds Mini Mixed Technique Art Journal by Karen Gaunt

Hello StencilGirl fans! Karen here with another project for you which funnily enough involves little or no stenciling!

So for our match up with Canvas Corp we got sent an amazing bunch of goodies. I instantly feel in love with the little naked journal they included for us. It got me thinking of making a little mini journal but using only one stencil throughout. I wanted to explore all the different ways I could manipulate and reproduce the stencil throughout my journal.

I ended up using Rae Missigman's Wise Buds stencil and there's not much I didn't do to this little stencil. I enlarged it every which way on the photocopies, carved my own stamps from it, made image transfers and even made a little shrink plastic charm with it.

I loved how to final journal turned out. I hope that it gives you some great ideas on how you can use your stencils in new and unusual ways and it gets you looking at your stash in a whole new way!

I hope that you enjoy my project video.
It's certainly jam packed with techniques! Thanks for watching!

StencilGirl & Canvas Corp!

This month StencilGirl Products is collaborating with Canvas Corp Brands to show unique ways to combine StencilGirl stencils with a variety of Canvas Corp Brands surfaces and Tattered Angels Paint Kits!

Be sure to check out the details at the end of this post on how you can win a prize package
worth over $50 in goodies from StencilGirl Products and Canvas Corp Brands!Hi, Mary Nasser here!
I’ve been having a blast combining StencilGirl stencils with products from Canvas Corp Brands!

My favorite new supply, hands-down, was the Tattered Angels Naturally Aged Kit in Turquoise!
I say "was" because I literally could not stop using it, until I used it all up!!
These are just some of the cool backgrounds I created in my art journal!
The directions were clear and easy to follow, yet the results varied each time in fascinating ways!

I gessoed all of these pages white first and created additional texture with white gesso, too.
I also loved that I could control the spray to keep it contained in my art journal (rather than on my studio table)!
It was mesmerizing watching the paints from this kit combine to make magic!
Below, I'm sharing an art journal spread I created on one of these backgrounds:
For this spread, I also sprayed a kraft tag and corrugated cardboard from Canvas Corp with the turquoise kit!
I stenciled the word "fly" from Carolyn Dube's Now Is The Time onto a small piece of black gessoed paper and glued this onto the corrugated piece. In addition, I adhered two globe images I created in Nancy Curry's Transformations workshop with  It's a Small World Latitude and It's a Small World Longitude.

I added layers of Canvas Corp burlap to create a contrast in texture against the background surface.
I used Let's Go 1 on the kraft tag with one of my favorite techniques: using a Jet Black Ranger Archival ink pad and a fingertip sponge daubers to stencil words, then removing the stencil and connecting the bridges of the letters with my Sakura black Identi-Pen.
And I used black acrylic paint with these Seth Apter stencils:

Once the paint dried, I added drawing with gel pens!

Happy Moments Journal by Tammy Tutterow

I love making little books that will let me record quick memories.  I love taking photos with my phone at random moment and using them in these little books.

This month the StencilGirl crew is team up with Canvas Corp to feature projects from both brands.  For my project, I chose to create a fun mini album to record some of those random moments.  I wanted to keep the palette very neutral to play up the kraft cover and to look very sketchy.  The finished stencil design looks complex and detailed but is so easy to create in a few simple layers.

Dry brush Tan High Impact Paint to create a light neutral base.  The base will help future layers stand out more.  Use a heat tool to dry the paint.

Randomly mist over the cover with Ivory Baseboard Spray to add additional base coverage.  Use a dry cloth to blot any excess and then dry with a heat tool.

Lay the Large Bubbles Stencil L007 over the cover.  Use an ink blending tool with foam to dab Boardwalk Glimmer Mist randomly onto the cover through the stencil.

Tip: Tap the foam onto your craft sheet before dabbing onto the cover to help remove excess ink.  You don't want to apply too much of the fluid ink at one time, it is better to use less in multiple layers.  Heavy applications could seep under the stencil.

Gently blot any excess ink with a dry cloth and dry with a heat tool.

Place the Large Bubbles Stencil back in place.  Use an ink blending tool with foam to dab Coconut Shell Glimmer Glaze randomly to the cover.  Apply the glaze in some of the same areas as the Boardwalk Glimmer Mist and also some areas the were not previously inked.  This will create three shades of color.  Use a heat tool to dry the cover.

Mist some of the Boardwalk Glimmer Mist onto your craft sheet.  Use a water brush to pick up some of the color.  Brush the color onto the top edges of some of the bubbles.  I focused on the bubbles in the upper left  and left side of my cover.  Use a heat tool to dry the ink.

Place the Large Bubbles Stencil in place again.  Use a graphite pencil to outline a few random bubbles.  You can outline them completely or just along the left edge.

Smudge over the pencil lines with your finger to help blend and soften them.

Place the Large Bubbles Stencil in place again.  Place the Doodle It Tornado Bloom Stencil on top of the Large Bubbles Stencil.  Use an ink blending tool with foam to apply Tan High Impact Paint to the cover through the two layers of stencils.

The bubbles stencil will act like a mask allowing you to add the doodled design to only the bubbles on the cover.  Dry the paint with a heat tool.

Place the Large Bubbles Stencil in place again.  Place the Mini Dots Stencil on top of the Large Bubbles Stencil.  Use an ink blending tool with foam to apply Coconut Shell Glimmer Glaze to the cover through the two layers of stencils. Use a heat tool to dry the glaze.

Fold a one yard piece of Red Ticking from Canvas Corp Products in half.  Sew along the raw edge of the fabric to create a long tie for the journal.  Layer the ticking tie with a scrap of yellow burlap.  Adhere both to the center of the front and back covers of the journal.

Add machine stitching along the edges of the covers to secure the tie in place.

Tear a journaling card down to about 1" x 2".  Use an ink blending tool to add Gathered Twigs Distress Ink to the edges of the card and journal cover.

Add a hand written title to the piece of journal card.  Layer the journal card with a small die cut heart.  Adhere both the cover over the journal tie.

I simply love how the different layers of stenciling combine to create such depth. There are so many variations to the colors, all from using only 4 colors!  I love how applying the different layers randomly make them flow in and out of each other.

I always start with the cover on a book like this.  It helps me to set the tone and style of the inside.  I can not wait to dive in and finish it inside!
