Creating with StencilGirl® Products in Your Planner

Hi, everyone! Karen Seifert here! Have you joined the Planner Community?
Some will say it keeps them organized, more time efficient, and are able to get more done.
This is true, but I love the creative part the best, and I believe most planner people agree.

I hope you enjoy my video below:
This planner size is called a Traveler's Notebook because of its portability:
Creating with StencilGirl® Products in Your Planner
Placing the mini calendar stencil in the upper right, I used a light blue stamping ink, and sponge dauber.
Using a “dabbing” motion, I filled in all areas, then came back with a darker blue ink to fill in the specific dates of that week (June 18 -23). I also used the “Jun” portion of this stencil in the upper left.

Using the same dark blue ink, I filled in “Blessings” across the bottom. The flexibility of the stencil allows me to ink across the center indented binder area, and still achieve perfect, clean, inked lettering.

In the top and bottom left corners, I used the Vine stencil, inking with a dark green. Keeping the stencil in place,
I outlined the leaves and stems using an 01 black Micron pen, following with random dots.

Even with the artwork, there is still room to document appointments, and reminders.
Spending quiet time being creative in your planner, will hopefully bring some peace to your busy life.

Again, I used my stamping inks, sponge daubers, and outlined with black Micron pen.

Joanne Sharpe's NEW Whimsical Planner Stencils

The planner phenomenon has taken the world by storm!   As a diehard art journaler, planner, notebook hoarder, (I mean collector) and pen and paper person, I wanted to design “artful planner” stencils that are functional and unique in the creative planning process. Whether you are an art or bullet journaler, planner aficionado or paper artist, the elements will add a whimsical touch to your handwritten organizational system.  In my sets for Stencil Girl, I have included exclusive alphabets, numbers, page headers and some fun little icons.  They are designed to be used with pens, pencils, and paint as a foundation for creativity and personal customization.

TOP TEN TIPS for using “WHIMSICAL PLANNER” STENCILS:

#1: PRIME THE WHOLE STENCIL SHEET
I made a sampler sheet on bristol paper of each whole stencil with acrylic paint so that the detailed imagery was easier to see. (The paint remains on the stencil and that is okay.)

#2: CUT IT UP!  Cut the sheets into FOUR pieces for ease of use and simple storage in a journal or notebook pocket.

#3: THE RIGHT PENS
Because the lettering tends to be on the smaller size it’s important to have pens and markers that make the process flawless. I have tried and tested the many pens in my personal stash and have found that the best pens and markers to use are fine tip, with a protective plastic or metal tip. These include Staedtler Triplus Fineliner, Flair by Papermate, Tombow TwinTone and Micron PN. These work best because the pen ink is not rubbing off in the stencil channel.  The pens by these brands come in dozens of colors.

#4: SLOW AND STEADY
This stencil collection is made with thicker, 10ml mylar making it comfortable to trace smaller elements. Some of the finer details of the letters and numbers are a little delicate and will shift if drawing too quickly. Trace the stencil with pens or pencil SLOWLY to capture all the details. Color the inside of the outlines with colorful markers or even watercolor paints. It’s very cathartic and meditative.

#5 MAKE YOUR OWN PLANNER SYSTEM
Trace the monthly headlines, days of the week, numbers and imagery to customize your own planner system in a blank sketchbook or journal.

#6 ALPHABET PLAY
Mix, match and play with the fonts and lettering in this stencil collection to make a pleasing and interesting look for phrases, words, and messages.

#7 PERMISSION TO ELABORATE
It’s perfectly fine to add your own hand to the elements, redraw the shapes and letterforms, changing the look and sizing. There are endless possibilities with the assorted stencil letters.

#8 PENS OR PAINT?
Try both! The designs are intended to be traced with pens, markers, and pencil, but work perfectly, gently stomping with your favorite acrylic paint or inking techniques. Watercolors work too!

#9 DOODLE YOUR STYLE!
Put your own spin on the look of the lettering, by tracing the letters and filling the inside with fancy doodle designs and patterns.

#10 ARTFULLY DECORATE!
Use the boxes and borders in this collection to embellish pages with decorative journaling spaces and repetitive line art included in the stencils.

The possibilities are endless! Share your stencil planner art. I have set up an Instagram hashtag: #artfulstencilplanner so that you can share your very own unique planner systems and designs. You can also tag #stencilgirl. We can’t wait to see what you create!

Festive Stenciled Bags!

Hi! Mary Nasser here! It’s nearly Valentine’s Day, so I was inspired to make Valentine’s gift bags!
I started using Margaret Applin’s HeartSwirl stencil, but you’ll see how I quickly used 3 more stencils
to decorate gift bags for other holidays, too!

For this project, I used white paper lunch bags I had in my kitchen.

I trimmed the top of each lunch bag with Fiskars Border Punches.
(I used the Threading Water Border Punch and Apron Lace Border Punch for my gift bags in this post.)

After punching the border along the top, I folded the top of the bag down.

Then I turned the bag over, used painters tape to keep my stencil in place, then pounced on a light layer of acrylic paint
with an ink sweeperI kept the paint light so that it would not seep under the stencil.

Here's the front of the bag to be filled with treats:

For the back, I stamped a tag and added a ribbon:

I was having too much fun to stop there, so I made another one, using the same process.

And here's the back:

Then I remembered Bruno's birthday next month, and reached for my

Happy Birthday, Bruno!

And soon after Bruno's birthday comes Easter.
There's a stencil for that, too!

How fun would this be to fill with colorful jelly beans!
As much as I love incorporating StencilGirl stencils into my mixed media paintings,
it's really fun to do quick projects like this, too!
Hope I've inspired you!

StencilGirl Whimsey Script Stencil

Welcome Friends!

Hi, Paula Phillips here! I was beyond excited to work with this wonderful stencil design by Joanne Sharpe for StencilGirl called Whimsey Script:

My favorite stencil designs consist of those that can be used on multiple projects, in multiple ways.  When I first saw this stencil I immediately thought of how perfect it would be for a final finishing layer on many of my unfinished art journal pages.

If you are like me, you may have multiple journal pages or projects that are in that "almost there" phase.  You know, the phase where you wonder to yourself: "What more does this it need?".  I call this the finishing layer.
This layer helps tie in all your wonderful background goodness!  In the examples below you will see before and after pictures of journal pages from my Magazine Art Journal.

*Note* A magazine art journal is a magazine that I covered and turned into an art journal.  As with any book with thin pages, it's a good idea to glue stick two pages together prior to working on them.

For these pages I limited myself to just a few supplies:

Whimsey Script StencilGirl Stencil
- Faber-Castel Big Brush Pen in black
- A few craft paints
- Makeup sponges
- A few spray inks
** Don't forget to use complimentary colors, or my faves, black and white :)

 Before:

After:

For the above spread I chose to use a cream craft paint and a slightly wet makeup sponge.  I wanted the stencil image to be a bit messy.  The wet makeup sponge thins the paint out enough so that it bleeds under the stencil just a bit.  I love how this looks!  The initial paint was applied to the stencil that is under the work "your".  Since there was still a lot of paint left on the underside of the stencil I stamped it down on the the opposite page and applied a bit of pressure.  When you lift the stencil up you will see a similar image to the one under the word "calm".

I repeated this process 3 more times, each time the image becoming more and more faint.

Before:

After:

I love this page!  The Whimsey Script stencil was a perfect compliment to the alphabet die cut on the right.  I used blue craft paint with a dry makeup sponge.  As there was already some purple spray ink on the stencil the blue paint mixed with it when applying.  I love the two-toned look!  I also played around with tilting the stencil to mimic the rest of the elements.

Before:

After:

I chose to use a purple spray for the above page.  I sprayed ink through the stencil three times.  I was a little too close to the page when I sprayed the stencil (practice this too see what you like, but I try to hold the spray about 8" above the page) on the top left.  The excess ink started to drip so I took the floportunity to aid in the drippage by blowing the ink so it dripped downwards.  Remember, there are no mistakes!

Before:

After:

I also used a black spray ink for the above spread.  Remember to let the stencil hang off the page a little every so often, this helps the design look more cohesive.  I also like to embellish in odd numbers, I chose five sprayed images here.

Before:

After:

This page uses a cream craft paint dabbed on with a makeup sponge.  I overlapped the stencil onto the main stamped image of the letter mail slot.  Having your image touching elements you want to focus or highlight helps the stenciling to look planned, as well as helping to bring it all together.  There was a little black spray remaining on the stencil which blended with the cream paint as I dabbed.

Before:

After:

I love creating backgrounds.  In the above spread I felt completely stuck.  I liked the background, yet did not know where to go next.  Adding the Whimsey Script stencil with a little sprayed ink did the trick!  This time I chose to spray through only some of the image.  I believe in making it messy on purpose.  If you chose this approach there are no mistakes or smudgy images... you intended it that way! :)

Need backgrounds?  Tomorrow, July 26th, is StencilGirlTalk's first blog hop where I will be sharing an easy background technique!  All of the wonderful StencilGirl Creative Team will be participating in this hop, don't miss it!   Here is a sneak peek of my project for tomorrow..
