Are you making pages in your artistic bullet journals and planners for 2022?

Oh good!

Valerie Sjodin has new stencils and Masks on a Mid Century Modern theme that are perfectly fun for journals, cards, and mixed media art.

The Mid Century Modern Circle Patterns Stencil and Mask are divine layered or not. Your choice!

They celebrate stars and florals in such a fun way full of possibility! It can add modern pizazz to a plain journal page, be a background pattern, or central focus of a piece of art.

Tip: Visit Valerie’s Stencil page to mix and match these stencils with others like the Mid-Century Modern Banners to title your journal pages in a Retro style.

Up next, Bead Swag!

This is a lovely stencil also meant for layering. with itself or other stencils.

Valerie says, "This fun Mid Century Modern Bead Swag Stencil dances across your artwork either simply with the shapes and circles, delicately with the beaded garland, or layered with a stencil of your choice as a pattern underneath. It can also be used to trace around for collage garland."

Medium: Watercolor. Extra stencil used to layer: Spirit Wind, S578

Of course, it is not necessary to layer it. Imagine this elegant pattern on a wedding guest book or used to create invitations.

Use Circle Sticks as a Mid Century Modern bird nest or stick pattern to decorate your journal page or any artwork.

There are three chicken wire patterns in the Chicken Wire Mask AND they’re even repeatable patterns so you can cover your art with consistent patterning.

You can mix and match these with other Mid-Century Modern style stencils and masks on Valerie’s Stencil page.

Grid It: Bullet Journal with StencilGirl Stencils

GRID IT - Bullet Journal prep for the coming year

I was slow to jump on the Bullet Journal bandwagon.  I have always been attracted to gorgeous planners and I follow lots of BuJo junkies on Instagram, but I figured I really didn't need one.  As an introvert, I'm never happier than when my calendar has ZERO entries on it - no interruptions, no obligations, no deadlines, nobody tugging my sleeve.  I'm also officially retired. Why on earth would I need a planner?
Pictures clipped from an old children's dictionary, washi tape, and rubber stamping enliven the page.
But then I began to put two and two together - if I'm designing the planner myself, I can design it exactly for my needs.  Maybe I don't need or want a lot of space for daily calendar entries, but there are definitely things I want to accomplish - daily goals, weekly tasks, projects that need my attention.  When I noticed how people were using their Bullet Journals for establishing or breaking habits that were either productive or holding them back, I saw my entry.  For sure, the creative process of
making weekly spreads and monthly habit trackers is a large part of the charm.  But I also do find that I'm much more likely to take my vitamins or lengthen my daily dog walks if I'm tracking them this way, and clean out closets if I have to keep moving that incomplete task to another spread.  At this stage of my life the things I want to track are primarily related to my health and well-being, and since I travel internationally, I'm trying to teach myself how to tell the temperature in Celsius by recording it every day to get it into my bones, so to speak.  I have plenty of other creative projects, so I don't need my planner to be absolutely stunning, but I do like it to be fun to make and fun to use, which pretty much guarantees that I will indeed use it.  I don't use all the "official" Bullet Journal techniques and strategies, but hey, this is my planner and what I don't need or find useful I don't intend to use.
For the coming month I am keeping my palette super simple: black and white.  I've used Mary Beth Shaw's Grid Stencil Set (Set 9) to establish the layout for daily entries and some trackers.  I usually work on grid paper, but not always; mixing it up with black card stock gave some pages a dramatic punch.  You'll also notice that I use a mini ring binder (A5 size) - I prefer working on loose sheets of paper and then punching holes.  This lets me rearrange pages and sections as I go, and use whatever kind of paper suits my fancy.  Employing foldouts means the pages don't even all have to be the same size.  Of course there's some amount of collage on each spread.  That's simply a given!

I can check off daily boxes when I have completed my meditation exercise, and the journal card in the pocket will be a my gratitude journal for the month.
So I guess you can say that this introvert is now a convert.  Here's to a productive new year around the corner.  Happy Holidays, and happy stenciling to you all!

What was old is new again - Bullet Journal/Planner Cover Makeover - with Cheetarah

Hi everyone, it's Cheetarah here and I'm excited to be back on the blog to share a project I made under a new segment which is called "What is old is new again" in which the StencilGirl® Creative Team is asked to pick something up at their local thrift/ second-hand store and give it a new life.

I went to Het Warenhuis which is a thrift store where I live in Leiden, the Netherlands and browsed around when I found something that caught my eye... A discarded notebook cover what was probably used for IT-work segment course. Lately, I am slightly obsessed with notebook covers, I have a variety of those already, but saw real potential to turn this into a jazzed up cover for my Leuchtturm A5 planner. And So I bought it for 50cents(!) and went to work.

So as you can see the cover went through quite a transformation!
I've filmed the process for you which you can see below:

I really enjoyed giving this quite boring cover such a successful make-over.
Here are some close-up shots of the cover in use:

It currently holds my Emerald Leuchturm A 5 notebook / daily planner.

I added a transparent folder in the back for loose items and you can see the Einstein quote quite nicely through it. Also I thought it was fun to add this quote as it was a cover specifically for learning/work but now it's transformed to hold my thoughts and idea's which come forth out of my imagination :)

The front and the back of the cover, the swirl patters cane through so nicely with the help of Finnabair Opal Magic paints! And I love the depth the translucent Mettalique paints provided.

This statement on the inside pocket is such a powerful one and it reminds me to be present for all things I am doing and planning to in my life with the help of organizing it in my bullet journal& planner.

The StencilGirl® stencils I used are:

Joanne Sharpe's NEW Whimsical Planner Stencils

The planner phenomenon has taken the world by storm!   As a diehard art journaler, planner, notebook hoarder, (I mean collector) and pen and paper person, I wanted to design “artful planner” stencils that are functional and unique in the creative planning process. Whether you are an art or bullet journaler, planner aficionado or paper artist, the elements will add a whimsical touch to your handwritten organizational system.  In my sets for Stencil Girl, I have included exclusive alphabets, numbers, page headers and some fun little icons.  They are designed to be used with pens, pencils, and paint as a foundation for creativity and personal customization.

TOP TEN TIPS for using “WHIMSICAL PLANNER” STENCILS:

#1: PRIME THE WHOLE STENCIL SHEET
I made a sampler sheet on bristol paper of each whole stencil with acrylic paint so that the detailed imagery was easier to see. (The paint remains on the stencil and that is okay.)

#2: CUT IT UP!  Cut the sheets into FOUR pieces for ease of use and simple storage in a journal or notebook pocket.

#3: THE RIGHT PENS
Because the lettering tends to be on the smaller size it’s important to have pens and markers that make the process flawless. I have tried and tested the many pens in my personal stash and have found that the best pens and markers to use are fine tip, with a protective plastic or metal tip. These include Staedtler Triplus Fineliner, Flair by Papermate, Tombow TwinTone and Micron PN. These work best because the pen ink is not rubbing off in the stencil channel.  The pens by these brands come in dozens of colors.

#4: SLOW AND STEADY
This stencil collection is made with thicker, 10ml mylar making it comfortable to trace smaller elements. Some of the finer details of the letters and numbers are a little delicate and will shift if drawing too quickly. Trace the stencil with pens or pencil SLOWLY to capture all the details. Color the inside of the outlines with colorful markers or even watercolor paints. It’s very cathartic and meditative.

#5 MAKE YOUR OWN PLANNER SYSTEM
Trace the monthly headlines, days of the week, numbers and imagery to customize your own planner system in a blank sketchbook or journal.

#6 ALPHABET PLAY
Mix, match and play with the fonts and lettering in this stencil collection to make a pleasing and interesting look for phrases, words, and messages.

#7 PERMISSION TO ELABORATE
It’s perfectly fine to add your own hand to the elements, redraw the shapes and letterforms, changing the look and sizing. There are endless possibilities with the assorted stencil letters.

#8 PENS OR PAINT?
Try both! The designs are intended to be traced with pens, markers, and pencil, but work perfectly, gently stomping with your favorite acrylic paint or inking techniques. Watercolors work too!

#9 DOODLE YOUR STYLE!
Put your own spin on the look of the lettering, by tracing the letters and filling the inside with fancy doodle designs and patterns.

#10 ARTFULLY DECORATE!
Use the boxes and borders in this collection to embellish pages with decorative journaling spaces and repetitive line art included in the stencils.

The possibilities are endless! Share your stencil planner art. I have set up an Instagram hashtag: #artfulstencilplanner so that you can share your very own unique planner systems and designs. You can also tag #stencilgirl. We can’t wait to see what you create!
