Stencils--No, They Are Not Just For Paint

Hi Everyone, it's Maria!

Thought I'd take a turn here on the new blog and show you something I have been working on. I'll tell you a secret that not many people know...I have a deep LOVE of stitching. Yes, now it is not a secret anymore. I have a hard time relaxing. I've tried meditation and it is just not for me BUT stitching and doodling now that does the trick!

Another secret that you may not know is that there are quite a few new stencils in development from StencilGirl like the one above that is not available yet. Make sure you "Like" us on Facebook and be the first to know when new stencils are released.

Mary Beth and I were talking how to incorporate stencils into other projects and we both fell in love with the idea of using your stencils for stitching projects. Not that no one has ever thought of this before BUT....when you think about embroidery or stitching with StencilGirl stencils it is MIND BLOWING all of the ideas you can come up with. Let me tell you, I have been a little obsessed with the idea lately! As a matter of fact, I finished the project above in 2 days because I was so inspired at the possibilities.
Here's a little look at the process I used with the project above. For demonstration purposes, I used a  stencil that was an exclusive available for StencilClub users in a paisley shape.

I laid my stencil out on the fabric and traced around the design with a soft lead pencil. I have also used the disappearing pen showed in the picture with great results.
I like the pencil best.

Next, I started stitching. This is where the possibilities are ENDLESS. Use different stitches, thread, beads (I used some beads in the blue project above).

Want to see what Mary Beth came up with??

She took a little different approach than I did to start.
She used the  Leaves StencilGirl stencil L105 from Terri Stegmiller and a light dabbing of fabric paint through the stencil to give her the stitching guidelines. This transfer of the design is great to use on a dark fabric.
I LOVE the of embellishing a plain t-shirt and making it a one of a kind!
I'm sure Mary Beth will be seen teaching in this shirt so look out for it!

So there you have it another FUN way to look at your stencils.
I want your feedback. Leave me a comment and tell me what you think I should make with my blue piece of stitchery and what you think of this technique with stencils!

Thanks for stopping by!
Maria

  10. What a wonderful post, Maria. I haven't done any embroidering for 30 or 40 years, I guess. I learned from my grandmother. Seeing your work inspires me to give it another shot. Beautiful work.

  15. Cool projects! Fab way to personalize your clothing into a unique piece. I´m quite a linear thinker so I´d say the blue design might be worked into a cushion or a bag.

  16. I' a stitcher too, or I used to be before all the other things like paper and metal and wire and beads took over! I love the idea of using stencils as a pattern for stitching. It may cause me to get back to my needle and thread!
