StencilGirl® Doll Makeover Collaboration Challenge

Hello StencilGirl® and stencil lovers!

Tina Walker here today with a new Collaboration Challenge.  This month, we are ALTERING DOLLS!  How might someone go about altering a doll?  Simple!  Alter the doll's clothes, alter the doll's accessories, or even alter the doll's physical body!  And yes, this can all be done with stencils!

The challenge was simple - take a gently (or not gently) played with doll, and get creative with stencils, techniques, and more.

Here's what Tracy had to say about her project:

"For this project, I knew she HAD to have tattoos (like me) so I was inspired to find stencils that could easily be tattoos.  My doll had clothes that really weren't conducive to being stenciled so I hand made everything she has on (except shoes)!  I absolutely adore how she came out!"

SO, SO cute.  I love her eclectic, authentic self!  You do it girl!

Here's what Deb had to say about her project:

"I started with a box of doll heads I bought from an Etsy seller. This head caught my eye because she was completely bald but still wearing earrings—can you relate?  I pictured her as a tattooed girl in a hand-embroidered dress.

I used a 100% cotton kitchen towel as the base for the hair, body, and dress. For the hair, I tore the towel into 1/2-inch strips, tied knots in the middle, sprayed them with Dylusions Ink Sprays, and glued the knots to the head.

The body started with a basic doll pattern, but I had to enlarge it a bit to fit the head. Nothing scientific—I just kept penciling around the pattern until the proportions looked right! Before assembling the body, I stenciled the tattoos to the fabric. Because I started with a white towel, I used Dylusions Ink Spray to make the skin pink/tan. The finished doll is stuffed with lentils and Polyfil. The lentils add weight to her lower body parts to help her sit.  The legs and arms are also similarly filled.

For the dress, I used the “Layered Salad” stencil by Terri Stegmiller. I stenciled different colors onto the kitchen towel fabric and then hand-embroidered the design areas. Once the embroidery was finished, I laid the doll on the fabric and sketched a simple sheath dress pattern around her.

Here's what Patsy had to say about her project:

"This is a sad rainbow girl, inspired by the shirt she came with.   It is hard for me to make happy art these days. I used Stencils Girls “Lots of Dots” for her dress.  She will probably evolve a bit more; I hope to find a coffin in the Halloween aisle and do something with her then.

loved the stencil and the colors remaining on it after I used it, which made me want to the stencil in an art project.:

Before I reveal my doll, here's a little BTS look at what she looked before her makeover, during her makeover (just for fun), and her finished, Victorian Inspired Self.

I bought her and a few of her closest friends at an auction and since she was a larger size, I could really alter-her-up!

She HAD TO HAVE a vintage-inspired backdrop...so stencils to the rescue. 

 Although her stencils 'parts' are subtle, so is BOLD in every way! Are you wondering how I got her hair to stand up and how I painted her body?  I used Powertex products throughout.  Interested in learning more about how Powertex works and how using it with your stenciled projects really elevates your dimensional work into the sky!

Carol Ponsford - September 2023 StencilClub - Journal page

Hi everyone, so happy to have you here on the blog today. My name is Carol Ponsford 

and I am here to share the journal spread I did using the September 2023 StencilClub set 

"Standing on the Ceiling" designed by Trena Brannon and Mary Beth Shaw. There are 

so many possibilities with this set but my first inclination was to create figures with a subtle

background behind it and also include a quote about empowerment.

These are the two stencils you will get in the set. The one on the left, I have cut into 

3 sections and also cut out each of the designs. The right stencil I left whole.

The shape on the bottom of the picture shown above reminded me of a human figure

 and the other parts looked like they would make great headdresses so those

 are the 3 shapes that will make up the goddess dolls that I want for my journal page.

I used my gel plate to pull a print of these shapes as well as an additional body shape. I

applied Daniel Smith Acrylic Iridescent Gold Gesso to the gel plate and laid the stencils

on top, removed the gesso on a scrap piece of paper so that only the designs would

 remain on the gel plate. I removed the stencil, let the gesso thoroughly dry, then used the

brayer to apply a thin layer of Golden Matt Gel Medium and pulled the print on black copy paper.

I cut the shapes out and as you can see the goddesses are starting to take shape.

I set them aside to dry completely. before coloring them with colorful Posca Paint Markers. 

I spread Ranger's Dina Wakley Media black gesso on a journal spread and let it dry.

Using the architectural stencil with Master's Touch Payne's Grey on a sponge I

applied the paint through the stencil all over the background.

I stamped faces on some paper and cut them out and then assembled the 

goddess/dolls. After gluing them on the page where I wanted, I used Posca Paint 

Markers to add the quote and add a border around the edge of the pages.

Picnic Check (S957)

Linda Edkins Wyatt’s Picnic Check stencil, S957, was inspired by medieval flags. The small heart shapes surrounding the diamond, as well as the paintbrush shapes inside the rectangles, add whimsy to the hard-edge geometric shapes. This design complements and contrasts with the flowing, abstract designs in her previous collections.

Woodcut Garden (S958)

Linda Edkins Wyatt’s Woodcut Garden, S958, was created from several of her hand-carved stamps, and is a companion to Woodcut Mix, M335. The flowing leafy and floral shapes were designs she constantly doodled, so she carved them into stamps, printed them together in an allover arrangement, then interpreted the new pattern as a stencil. It coordinates nicely with some of her small geometric patterns from the Wyatt ATC Mix Up, L852.

Paper Doll (S959)

Linda Edkins Wyatt’s Paper Doll stencil, S959, was inspired by her childhood love of paper dolls, especially Betsy McCall. As a child, it frustrated her that the paper dolls were stiff and unmovable, so she designed this stencil to have movable parts, allowing the dolls to express the feelings and energy of the person creating the doll. The dots can be poked with a needle or awl, and a small brad will join the pieces, keep the limbs together, yet allow for movement and pose-ability, and inspire storytelling.

Indroducing The Couture Collection by Trena Brannon

The Couture Collection was inspired by Trena's love of fashion illustration and warm memories of playing with paper dolls when she was a child. The set includes masks and fitted openings for endless possibilities for your artwork. Outlines provide a jumpstart for coloring, masks and open stencils allow for your customized designs, or you can use the ATC stencil included in the collection for fabric designs.

The collection includes  - a 9x12 model stencil with two sizes of three different models, a 9x12 closet stencil for the large models, a 6x6 closet for the smaller size models,  and a 9x12 ATC fabric/texture and other little bits stencil to complement the models.  The couture models stencil also includes a curvy woman, as many of us have curves and we embrace them all!

October StencilGirl® Collaboration - 1 Stencil, 3 Ways

Hello and Welcome to my October 2019 Collaboration Column Post - 1 Stencil, 3 Ways!

I'm Tina Walker and I'm your host for today!  ♥

Collaborations are a constant driving force in my daily creative journey.  If I had unlimited time and resources, I bet I would be hosting multiple ones each day.  There is something about collaborating with like minded souls that fills my creative soul with energy and inspiration.  It keeps me going!

Today's collaboration is more like a challenge.
The collaboration is simple -create three (3) projects using the same stencil on all 3 projects.  The first project is an art journal page, the second project is a home decor project, and the third project is of their choosing. Our brave stencil souls jumped at the challenge, so let's see what they created!

CATHY FRAILEY

Cathy used the Tribal Hand 6 Stencil.
 

Besides her art journal page, her home decor piece is a Hand Fan and her 3rd project is a trio of ATC cards.

Deb used the Cathedral Arch Stencil.

Although each artist made creating multiple and diverse projects with only 1 stencil, it is actually quite challenging.  Stencil selection is very important!

When choosing my stencil, I wanted a stencil with varying patterns that could be used in various ways, depending on the substrate.

I ultimately selected one of my Ireland inspired stencils: Goal Stairs.

I love the different shapes and sizes in the stencils and thought it would work well with all three of my projects.

First up - my art journal spread.  I love the steps on this stencil and love using them for journaling.

I used it repeatedly throughout the page, as background elements and in the forefront.  Sometimes, just the shape of the stencil inspires me and the details disappear.  But that is the beauty of using stencils! 

For my home decor piece, I used the stencil with clay to create a mug.  I am currently taking pottery classes and am obsessed with all things clay.  Stencils work great with clay and can create a deep or subtle impression.  Your choice.

Same stencil, but looks completely different!

For my last (free) project, I wanted to see how this stencil translated to a dimension project.  I hadn't made an art doll for awhile, so now was the perfect time.  The stencil was used to create texture on the doll skirt and body.   Again, I am amazed how different the stencil pattern looks when only a portion is visible. You can really selectively pick just a portion of a stencil for a piece. 

I had so much fun with this collaboration challenge.  :)  I challenge each of you to pick just 1 of your StencilGirl® stencils and create away!  You will really develop a close relationship with that stencil and see all of the possibilities.
