Mary Beth's Monday Musings...May 2014 Edition

I see Stencils Everywhere

I have always loved pattern; my doodles turn into patterns, I collect patterned wrapping paper and napkins, I tear out pictures of pattern from magazines. My abstract paintings often involve pattern and my drawings and journal pages include pattern without fail.

And that was before I made my first stencil.

After I started cutting my own stencils, it got worse. Suddenly every pattern started to hold additional meaning as I tried to envision it as a stencil.
Oh my.
I got perhaps a wee bit carried away and before you can say Laser Cut Stencils, I was that crazy person photographing a friend's blouse or hotel carpet. Rusted stuff. Cracks in the sidewalk. Cactus. More cactus. Random foliage. And so it goes. Here are just a few images I have collected lately.

What type of things do you photograph? Any stencil worthy imagery? Not that I am going to run out of ideas any time soon, but I love to hear what you all think. Start your wish list by leaving me a comment below.

  1. Gosh yes, I take photos of all sorts of texture and patterns, tree bark, rusty door fixing, lichen and moss, rough brickwork, walls, tiles in doorways, the list is endless and it drives my husband mad when we are out and about when I say hang on! And now with my phone I don't even need to take my camera out. Jo xx

  3. I take photos or my family, the city and nature. I would love to see stencils of vintage cars, urban style and industrial (tools nuts bolts) I love nature but I am a city girl and would love to but more of that into my projects.

Lately, I see stencils when I look at around...on a walk or in a room...it's fun!

  5. I am SO with you on this! I take pics of all kinds of stuff because I want to look back at the textures and patterns! Or Architecture!!! Oh my! When I went to Italy it was all about the tiles and the cornices and the iron work and the roof lines and the rough walls and the edges. Wow and Wow! Great minds think alike is all I can say! (wink) Love ya MB!

  6. Nature provides us with patterns galore, and so does industry, architecture, etc. In fact, pattern is all around us, if only we'd look.

    1. Yes, all pattern is originally based in nature, isn't it?

    2. Thank you, Mary Beth, for this post!! Yes, I too take pictures of patterns, moss, leaves, flowers, succulents, clouds, water….the list goes on and on. As far as man made - I love to take pictures of buildings and architectural elements. I have long been searching out stencils of this kind, especially urban grungy with fire escapes and buildings with perspective. So hard to find! I'm considering a silhouette cameo to satisfy my stencil cravings…however, if SG finds it stencil worthy, well, for me, that would be the ultimate, and everybody could enjoy!

  7. Mary Beth, I just got back from a trip to Longwood Gardens, PA, where I took my usual one million photos of textures (lichen, cracks, tree branches and bark, etc.) as well as a number of palm photos like the one you posted here. It's so much fun to find abstract patterns all around me! Clearly you and I were bitten by the same bug!
