By the time you read this I will have
returned from an exciting journey.
One of my quilts won me a trip to New York
and as a result I have spent a lot of time staring at maps.
I’m not ashamed to admit I’m a map addict and
still navigate my way everywhere with a printed map.
So I thought it would be a
great idea to dedicate my StencilGirl project this month
to a multi-layered map
composition to get in the mood for my trip!
On a 9 x 12” heavy duty watercolor paper add color using acrylic
paints and a brayer.
Let dry completely.
Add collage papers from an old map.
I used maps that had a personal significance to me.
Using low-tack masking tape, tape off radiating lines (or use any pattern of your choosing).
Cover with black gesso, and rub back some map area with a baby wipe.
Using Carolyn Dube's Buildings stencil and metallic paint (I used
Finnabair paints),
add patterns as shown.

Carefully remove the masking tape (there will be some bleeding but
don’t let that bother you!)
and outline the taped lines with a black marker.

Write on the map quotation by Angelie Jolie, or any quotation you
like, with a white marker.
My quote reads: “Any time I feel lost, I pull out a map and stare.
I stare until I have reminded myself that life is a giant adventure, so much to do and to see.”

I added my page to my huge Vintage Ledger
art journal after I had painted one of the pages of it with black acrylic. Now
I won’t get lost!
Frieda, such a fabulous piece. I love the sentiment of not getting lost while on the journey. Congratulations on your quilt win.
