Dare to Peer Through, An Art Journal Page by Nancy Lefko

When creating with StencilGirl stencils, I know I can easily be inspired by using stencils by Pam Carriker, Cat Kerr and Mary Beth Shaw. I also know that playing with the stencils in my art journal was the best choice as it’s the place I turn when introduced to a new art product or supply.
I gathered the following supplies:

9” x 12” 140 lb. watercolor journal
StencilGirl stencils: S402, L009, S498 & L165
fluid acrylic paint: aqua, mustard, vanilla & burnt sienna
foam brush/spouncer/paintbrushes
baby wipes
masking tape
pencils: black Stabilo, graphite & charcoal
white gesso
glazing liquid
markers: black fine line & aqua
light modeling paste
palette knife
heat tool
fluid chalk ink: burnt sienna

Apply aqua acrylic to journal page and blend, as you go, with a baby wipe. Dry with heat tool.

Determine placement of stencils and then affix Female Face 6 stencil to journal page with masking tape. Remove most of the tackiness from the tape first by sticking to fabric (I use my jeans) and pulling off several times. Trace through stencil with black Stabilo pencil.

Activate pencil with wet liner brush, blending as you go. Dry.
Using a DRY brush apply very light application of white gesso. VERY light; just to soften the features.

Reapply stencil and accent details with graphite pencil.

Using vanilla, burnt sienna and aqua acrylic paints, each mixed with acrylic glazing liquid, paint areas of face. Dry.

Using stencil Centered Circle stencil and a very light application (on foam spouncer) of aqua, followed by mustard acrylic paint, create a background design on the journal page. Move your spouncer in a circular motion as you move across the stencil.

Add additional design with stencil Carved Moon Phases.

Add hanging hearts (first checking placement of Door to Heart 9 stencil) using markers.

Place Door to Heart 9 stencil on page and affix with masking tape. Using a palette knife cover the stencil with light modeling paste. Carefully remove stencil and allow modeling paste to dry overnight.

Using a paintbrush, apply mixture of vanilla acrylic and glazing liquid to dry modeling paste. Blend with fingers and baby wipes. Dry. Repeat process with burnt sienna and then aqua acrylic, drying with heat tool in between colors.

Apply aqua paint to hearts with a liner brush, including the heart left behind by Door to Heart 9 stencil. Dry. Add charcoal shading to hearts and hanging threads.

Frame the journal page with an application of burnt sienna fluid chalk ink to the outer edges.

It was a delight to create this journal page with the beautiful stencils from StencilGirl.
I hope you find inspiration, as I did, and create one-of-a-kind pieces as well.
