My Angel

canvas with a stencil tutorial by Kirsten Reed for StencilGirl

Hi! Kirsten Reed here to show just one way to use the new beautiful stencil design,
 LOVE it!

First I took my wood canvas and collaged music tissue and plain tissue over the top and let it dry.

Then I took my virgin stencil (mine only look like this when they are NEW!!!) and laid it on top of my canvas.  I dabbed an aqua green through until I had a design across the entire top.

After I took my lime green  and dabbed in between on "blank" areas, but not all.  Just adding a layer of color and interest.

I then laid the stencil back on to match up where I had it laid for the aqua color, only this time I dabbed some white through. I did not do all areas, just a few to give it dimension.

So then, I stared at my beautiful canvas for a long time and asked myself ~ what do I want to paint?  I wanted to paint an angel, so I sketched her out with my pencil. I wanted my angel to look like she was from another time in history…not modern in any way, so I kept her lines simple.

I began filling her in with paint, a face and a long gown and wings.

I added three circles on the bottom left with my trusty toilet paper roll, just because it felt like it needed balance. I filled them in with white paint and dark teal for depth. When I filled in my angel, I did paint her face with layers of opaque white, buff and pink so the background did not show through, but I wanted the background to be part of her dress, so I used Golden fluid acrylics which are more transparent.  I shaded around her outline for more dimension.  I used a palette knife for her angel wings which helped give them movement.

I drew in her face, played a bit more with shading and details until I was happy with my final piece.

I really love how this angel looks like he/she could be from 1,000 years ago or today.  There is such a peace and maturity about her to me.

Thanks for joining me today!  I hope you enjoyed.

Join me tomorrow on my blog Keystrokes & Kaleidoscopes I will be featuring this stencil again for a bonus project! Hope to see you then!

  10. I just love this. It is a beautiful piece! The stencil background, angel image and colours all work so well together. Your choice of the rectangular panel really added to the medieval feel of the piece.
