May StencilClub Inspiration

Hi! Mary Nasser here today to show you what I did with the EXCLUSIVE
May 2014 StencilClub stencils designed by Terri Stegmiller!

Last month I made a painting for my nephew, so this month it was my niece’s turn!
These stencils are just so darn cute! I had such a delightful time playing with these!
It’s been an exceptionally cold winter, so it was great to think spring with these!

For this mixed-media painting, I used a 9” x 12” stretched canvas, vintage maps, gel medium, and acrylic paint.
First, I chose some vintage maps for their blue and green colors (I was thinking blue skies and lush, leaf-filled trees).
I cut and tore these into approximately one-inch square pieces and adhered these to my stretched canvas with gel medium.

I allowed this to dry overnight. Then the stenciling fun began!
I placed the 9” x 12” stencil onto the painting and stenciled the three branches and three birds with an ink sweeper and cobalt teal acrylic. I also used parts of the 9” x 12” stencils to add additional leaves and branches along the left lower half of the painting and the upper right-hand corner, too.
Using another ink sweeper and turquoise green acrylic, I stenciled in the butterfly.

With flat paintbrushes and cobalt teal, I filled in the shapes of the birds, branches and leaves.
With turquoise green and another flat brush, I painted in the shape of the butterfly completely.

Once this paint dried, I realigned my 9” x 12” stencil along the leaves,
branches and birds and pounced on turquoise green acrylic with another ink sweeper.
The translucency of the stencils makes it super easy to realign these on your work!
After realigning the butterfly stencil, I pounced on light rose violet.

Ta-da! Easy-peasy and fun to make!

Have fun playing with Terri’s stencils and see you in StencilClub on Facebook!
Happy Spring!

    6. Thank you, Eileen!
An ink sweeper is just an applicator to easily and quickly apply paint through stencils.

  3. I love how you work with maps as your base so often. And this turned out very nice. May I ask why you used he detailed stencil first and then covered it up?

    1. Thank you! I used the stencils first as a guideline as to where I wanted to fill in my solid color then stencil on the details again. Hope that helps! :)

  7. I learned a lot from this: the idea of stenciling, filling in with brushes, then re-stenciling. Fantastic results. Thanks Mary.
