Postage Stamp Flowers with Guest Designer Frieda Oxenham

Postage Stamp Flowers
I love postage stamps. There is something about them that is close to my heart. One of my grandfathers had a large collection, all carefully mounted in albums and it was a treat when he let me help with them.  My own postage stamp collection contains no precious stamps, but is simply the result of buying large mixed bags for little money. I love looking at them, seeing stamps from countries that no longer exist and pictures of historical events now long forgotten. And if you have been following my art on my blog you will know that I don’t mount my stamps in albums but instead add them to my art. I really went to town with them on this spread!

1.       Start by covering 2 sheets of A4 paper with postage stamps using regular gel (gloss)
both under and over the stamps. Let dry completely.

2.       Gesso 2 pages in Dylusions or equivalent journal.
3.       Scrape on various blue paints (I used an iridescent one in among the selection) to the top half of the pages, and remove paint through stencil Traci Bautista's Circles Circles stencil with a baby wipe.

4.       Repeat step 3 using green paints and Cecilia Swatton's Pressed Leaves stencil on the bottom of the page.

5.       Grab a few pages from a vintage book (I used a wild flower one) and paint with a variety of green paints
(one of mine was iridescent again).

6.       Trace the various flower shapes from stencil Terri Stegmiller's Bold Flowers stencil on the back of the 2 postage stamp sheets you made in step 1 and cut out. Try and get as many as you can from each sheet.

7.       Cut out triangular strips from the green painted paper (from step 5)
and glue onto the bottom of the pages using matte medium.

8.       Glue on the postage stamp flowers (using regular matte gel)
and intersperse with more of the triangular green paper (see step 7).

9.       Outline the postage stamp flowers with water soluble colouring pencils (I used Inktense ones)
and activate with a water brush.

10.   Outline green stems with a black marker.

11.   Glue on vintage text after edging it with blue (I used Broken China Distress Inkpad).
12.   Edge the pages with the same blue.

  3. I've had people at work giving me "interesting" stamps that they receive, and stashing them away -- for some miscellaneous use. Now I know why I've been saving them! Thanks.
