Art Journal Cover with Seth Apter Stencils

Hi, Mary Nasser here!
I’ve been having fun with Lizzie Mayne’s and Seth Apter’s stencil designs
both inside and outside my art journals.

Today, I’m sharing my newest art journal cover and techniques I used to inspire you to embellish your own!
These techniques can be used on the pages inside your art journals, too.
I opened my journal so I could paint the front, back and spine all at once.
I began by brushing black gesso over the entire cover of my large Dylusions journal.
Once that dried, I added some acrylic paint colors (blues and pinks) and allowed those to dry, too.

Then the fun part – stenciling! I overlapped Lizzie Mayne’s Large and Small Corrugated Lines stencils to create horizontal lines with white gesso.
(You can see I put blue painter’s tape over the elastic band to keep it clean.)
Then I rotated the same stencils 90-degrees to create white vertical lines with gesso.
I was heavy on the gesso because I wanted to create texture.
Let that dry. Then go to town! Brush, scrape, drip, and splatter on more layers of color! Again – the hardest part – let those layers dry. Then I removed the blue painter's tape.
I closed my journal and moved the elastic band over the edge opposite the binding so that I could stencil in the area where the band was. Using black acrylic paint, I pounced through You Got This and a portion of Make It Count. The hard edge around You Got This was created by taking blue painter's tape and masking a square around that stencil before applying the black paint.

Ta-da! I’ve made my new art journal my own, and I’m ready to fill the pages with lots of mixed media!!

Thanks so much for visiting StencilGirl Talk!
Happy stenciling and art journaling!
