Throwback Thursday July 2016: Stitched, Painted, Stenciled Mixed Media Projects and Art Journal Pages

Do you ever turn to art to banish the blues? There is something so zen about focusing on the project in front of you and and letting the world slip away.

Set your internal antennas set to receive a bit of sunshine! The Creative Team has art journal pages, party favors, wall hangings, and a clipboard to share with you!

Tina Walker's Beaded, Stitched and Stenciled Wall Hanging

Tina used the Leaf Poetry stencil to bring the outdoors within her home.
She'll share more about her artistic processes and a tutorial if you head over to her A Dog's Life blog.

Sunny Flowers in Cindy Gilstrap's Vintage Art Journal

Cindy painted flowers using the Broken Circles stencil as a base and the Antennas stencil as part of the pattern on the pages of her journal.

Tammy Tutterow's Clip Board: Note to Self

Tammy writes: I have been in a mixed media rut. I have wanted to make something, anything, but I couldn’t get past the starting part. My solution? Go back to something I have done before and make it again. In this case, I turned to a fabric art journal page that I made several months ago. To make it different, I used a similar but different stencil and went to work. I embellished it in a similar way but with different elements.
Along the way, your muse should kick in and take you to a different finish line than the first piece. It is a great way to spend time creating, which is what it is all about for me. You don’t always have to reinvent the wheel.

Carol Baxter's Opposing Double Triangle Party Favors

Talk about reinventing the wheel... Several years ago at CHA, I think in the Fiskars booth I saw these cute paper party favors that were sewn at either end and formed a double triangle. Geometry made me cry in school, but after an embarrassingly long time searching to no avail on Google and experimenting with different shapes of paper I discovered all I needed was a rectangle of pretty much any size. Everything is easy when you know how to do it, right?!

1. Stencil a rectangular piece of paper -- a 5.5 x 8.5 inch page from my art journal worked just fine.
2. Make a tube with your rectangle and stitch or tacky glue it.
3. Pinch one end of the tube closed flat and stitch it.
Tip: You can tape inside so the tape doesn't show but it will still need to be stitched (or you could use colored staples or even a few brads) in order to hold their shape.
4. Add goodies.
5. Close the other end of the tube the opposite way and stitch it closed with a sewing machine or by hand with an embroidery thread.

I also like how when you stencil a couple of rows within this stencil it looks a bit like a rattlesnake's rattle or maybe a spine.

Thanks for stopping by!
See you again for August's Throwback Thursday projects!

  1. Oooh, like the idea of rattlesnake/spine. It's such fun to just use part of a stencil.

  3. Great projects. I've made the party favors using empty toilet paper rolls. Throw some paint on them and they are good to go.
