Guest Designer Megan Whisner Quinlan: Art Journaling with StencilGirl® Stencils

This page was such a treat to put together for so many reasons. One of the silver linings of being stuck at home right now, is that all the artists are online sharing their ideas and impromptu tutorials. I was lucky enough to catch StencilGirl®‘s very own, Mary Beth Shaw, doing a Live on Instagram. I was able to play along and this page is based on the tutorial Mary used that day. The other treat here, is that I also signed up for the StencilGirl® Club monthly stencil subscription. The stencils (you get three) are always amazing and have such a broad appeal to any avid mixed media artist. In this project, I decided to use the May release, Light Catchers, by Roxanne Evans Stout.

I began tearing up old dictionary random bits, and then gluing to the kraft pages in my Dina Wakley Mixed media journal.

Once I had a good amount of pieces glued to my pages, I then used a Ranger Ink Mini Blending tool to apply some Dina Wakley Sand Acrylic paint around my page to tone down the contrast.

I then used the Large StencilGirl® Light Catcher Stencil and blended onto the page with Dina Wakley Penny Acrylic Paint. I switched the stencil direction and stenciled again with the Sand paint on top to create more layers of pattern.

I then used the 4” Light Catchers stencil and with some black gesso, stenciled randomly around the page.

After stamping some images onto cardstock (here I chose some from the Paper Artsy Lynne Perrella line) and cut them out. I also stamped some text from Dina Wakley’s Work in Progress stamp set and also cut out. I then used black gesso to stencil the 6” StencilGirl® Light Catchers stencil onto white cardstock and cut out to add more contrast.

I then arranged the images around the page and glued down. I finished off the page with some paint splats and journaling.

  Megan Whisner Quinlan

Hello! My name is Megan Whisner Quinlan. I have been art journaling and book binding for about 20 years. However, I took a 10 year break from paper arts when I had my first 2 children. About 5 years ago, I came back into journaling after some big life changes, including 2 more children. Journaling had always been a part of my life, especially to work things out in life on paper. When I first started out, I really only focused on making books by hand and some basic collage and stamping. I was intimidated by the amazing art journalers out there who had elaborate, mixed media spreads in their journals.  When I came back to journaling after such a long break, I decided that I was going to really push myself to learn all the techniques I had been too afraid to try.  Painting and drawing have really allowed me to find so much joy in my creative process, and I now almost exclusively create mixed media every day. I feel excited to have joined the art journaling community and you can find me on Instagram @Megan_Whisner_Quinlan.
