Carol Ponsford - July 2022 StencilClub Stencils

Hi everyone, Carol Ponsford here sharing what I was inspired to do with the July set of StencilClub stencils designed by Carolyn Dube.

I love researching my family history so when I saw the stencils my first thought was to do a journal spread honoring several generations of my family. It took me a little time digging through old photos but that is a task I always enjoy as it stirs up memories of happy times. Once I found the photos I needed, I snapped pictures of them with my phone so that I could resize them and print when I needed them. Now on with the layout of the page.

I took my 8” round gel plate and using my brayer rolled out a thin layer of light green and brown acrylic paint and printed a green half circle on the bottom of the 2-page spread. I then laid the word stencil on the round gel plate backwards (so that it would read correctly once printed) and using my brayer, applied a thin coat of Payne’s grey acrylic paint. I removed the stencil and aligned the plate over the first print and pressed firmly to transfer the paint to the page. You will really need to press on the fold or it will not make good contact.

I wanted to tone down the brightness of the green, so I mixed Antelope Brown Daler Rowney Acrylic Ink with some water (I tested on a scrap paper to make sure I had the correct shade I wanted) and painted the entire page. After the page was dry, I lightly sponged the word “family” at the top of the page with Daniel Smith Iridescent Gold Acrylic Gesso. I let the pages dry before stamping a text background with Coffee Archival Ink (Stampabilities Faded Text Background stamp was the stamp I used). I set the journal aside so that I could work on the other components of the journal spread.

The first step was to make decorative paper to use for the house shapes so I took a piece of
black cardstock and the strip of houses stencil and using the gold gesso and a sponge I made
stripes, blocking of the top of the houses with a piece of paper so that I would only get the grid pattern on my paper. I repeated this until the entire page was covered with a grid pattern. I let this dry then on the back of the paper took a white pencil and outlined the houses I wanted to use. I cut them out and laid them aside.

I then cropped the pictures to the size that I needed to fit in each house and printed them on my Phomemo printer on white sticker paper. I realized the white paper was too bright, so I took out my Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Ink pads and used Antique Linen first over the entire photo and then a patchy layer of the Vintage Photo to give the photos a more aged look. I then peeled the sticker back off and attached them to the house shapes.

Going back to my journal, I decided to add a few more random words from the stencil onto the background with a sponge and gold gesso. I also decided to outline with my black Stabilo All pencil and then carefully paint with a fine line brush with water on top of the pencil to bind it to the page.

I then turned my attention back to the house shapes to give them a little more definition I took my black Posca 0.7mm bullet tipped marker and outlined the house shape, about 1/8” all the way around. To finish them I added the family names to the pictures and attached them to the page with Golden Regular Gel Matte acrylic medium.

I hope you enjoyed this project and find ways to work your family history into your artwork. This is a page that will bring me great joy as I look back at my journal in years to come reminding me of childhood memories. Thank you StencilGirl® and Carolyn Dube for such a wonderful StencilClub set to help spark my imagination.

  7. I love your creation and the way you used the stencils - especially creating the gold and black grid - so clever. I spend time wondering and trying to learn about my ancestors and I totally appreciate the entire design. - Sara Norris
