The mythology and symbolism of the Gordian Knot inspired Carolyn Dube to create this stencil collection. “Cutting the Gordian knot” represents a creative solution to a seemingly insurmountable problem because a Gordian knot has no beginning or end, representing an unsolvable problem.
In mythology, an oracle had declared that any man who could unravel the Gordian Knot was destined to become ruler of all of Asia. This knot was complex, and after hundreds of years of people trying to untie it, it hadn’t budged. Then along came Alexander the Great. He tried for some time to untangle it and then finally took his sword and cut it in half. He did go on to rule Asia so maybe that Oracle knew what she was talking about.
