Flowers in bloom tags

Happy Spring creatives!

April showers bring May flower tags and these were simply a joy to create using Vintage Thicket S976  and Travel Note M102 both designed  by Rae Missigman.

What I love about this 6x6 stencil is the assortment of floral blooms that one can incorporate in their artwork.

The Travel note mini stencil is one I tend to reach for time and time again. I find it the perfect companion for art-journal pages and tags. It’s design is perfect for backgrounds and bits of it can be used for mark making as I did here.

The Process:

Cut your paper to preferred size ( I am using watercolour paper.

Create a flowing background first by applying water to the paper and then follow with acrylic ink or watered down paint.

Add the flower of your choice.

I wanted a flower that had more petals and to achieve this I simply flipped, turned the stencil upside down and added paint with my sponge.

With the Travel Note stencil apply sections to different pints of the tag with a contrasting colour.

To add dimension and softness to the petals I am using an Aquarell pencil which is water soluble. Simply trace the area with the pencil and with a wet brush trace the pencil lines to generate movement . See picture below.

For the final steps, punch a hole in each tag, add pieces of old book pages and bits of fabric.

Learn to Let Go~ an affirmation keepsake

Happy Heart Day friends;

Today I want to share with you a little heart keepsake that I was inspired to create using the I Am Words stencil created by Cat Kerr.

One thing to note about me is that I am a glass half full kind of girl and I am all about positive self talk, setting boundaries and self love.

The I Am Word stencil is all that for me as it serves as the perfect reminder and hence it was chosen to be the star of today’s project.

I will be using inks on an old canvas today but the project can also be made on fabric and with acrylic paints and a sponge rather than sprays.

Some slow stitches add another layer of interest as does the tattered edges.

For the tattered edges I used drop cloth ~ yes the kind you find at the hardware store!! 

Choose bits of fabric, lace, ribbon or simply leave it as is.

Think of the process as making a sandwich.

There is a bottom layer, a middle and a top layer! 

Let’s start:

Set the stencil on your fabric and apply paint or spray ink of your choice. I am working on canvas and decided to use Distress Spray stains

Now remember the sandwich reference- here are the steps.

*Cut out a heart from your stencil fabric

*Cut a piece of batting the same size

*Cut a third heart about 1/2” bigger than the stencilled one.    This will be the base.

 I used a piece of rescued denim. 

Now we will layer them together.

I used fabric glue to hold them together.

*glue the batting on to the base fabric. In this case the denim.

Next cut pieces of fabric that will serve as the tattered edges.

The length will depend on the size of heart. For this one I cut 2.5” strips and folded in half (just to save time pus it makes it easier to stitch)

With the fabric glue tack them all around the heart shape ensuring they overlap the batting just a bit.

Take the stencilled heart and with the glue tack on top of all this goodness.

I found using some pins to keep it secure also helped with the slow stitching. 

Stitch around the entire heart by hand or the sewing machine.

Now as I said up top, this step can be omitted but it does add a raw rustic feel which I love.

Lastly, add a positive note or several ~ that you can refer to when needed 💓

Hello friends, 

Tina here with another creative stencil idea not only for the holidays but for any celebration (or just because they are so fun to make!)  

Below I will guide you through the steps of creating stencilled layered papers using just one stencil, a gel plate and a simple folding technique to create quick paper fans that can dress up a tree, gift or made into a garland.  Please don't stop here, use these papers in your art journals, cards and tags!

I am using acrylic paint in the same colour family ~ I love that slight contrast of tone and adding gold acrylic for some shine.

The stencil I am working with forthis project is Stone Stack by Jane Monteith.

I love the organic stone formation and when used with the tequinique below it creates gorgeous layers.

The Process:

Apply paint to the gel plate and with a plain piece of printer paper lift this first layer

Apply a contrasting colour to the gel plate, lay the stencil on top and with the same piece of paper lift the second layer

Remove the stencil and wait for a few seconds then apply the gold paint.  Lay the same paper on top (rotate the paper so that the stones are not laying over the negative image on the gel plate. Lift this final layer.

Fold the paper in half and cut down the center so you have two equal pieces.

Take one of the pieces and create the first fan fold (2.5cm) continue until the entire piece is folded.

Fold it half and trim the edges~I snipped them to a point but feel free to snip as desirre

d.

Note: Folding the paper vertically will create a longer fan and horizontally a wider fan. I made both!

Lay the piece flat with the painted side facing up and with a piece of string tie a double knot in the center

Turn it over and glue the two flat sides together

Once the glue is dry unfurl the folds 

To add a festive touch I am adding glitter to the tips (optional) . For this a glitter glue or glue and glitter can be used. I had the later on hand.

Add a wooden bead (optiional) for a finishing touch
