StencilGirl Products and Walnut Hollow Blog Hop and Giveaway!

Welcome to the StencilGirl and Walnut Hollow Blog Hop!
This time we are doing something a little different and actually having your first piece of inspiration artwork right here on StencilGirl Talk. Our friend, Judi Kauffman, is hopping with us and has a beautiful project for you to see right here. Information about our GIVEAWAY is the end of the post. Have fun hopping!
Take it away Judi!!!

By Judi Kauffman for Walnut Hollow

I thought it would be fun to create two tissue boxes, one for "His" nightstand and one for "Hers", using the same colors so they would look good on opposite sides of the bed. To tie things together, I used the same stencil on the top of both boxes. The Map pattern and Sporn Flowers Negative are an unexpected juxtaposition, but the two stencils have the same general feel - complex pattern in the same scale, and I love the way they look together!

Instructions:

1. Base coat both boxes with French Gray Blue acrylic paint. Allow paint to dry.

2. HIS - Paint: Using a stencil brush and Snow (Titanium) White acrylic paint, stencil Map pattern on the top and all four sides of the "His" box. Keep the effect dappled rather than precise by using a tapping motion and relatively little paint. Allow paint to dry.

3. HERS - Paint: Using a stencil brush and Snow (Titanium) White acrylic paint, stencil Map pattern on the top of the "Hers" box and Sporn FlowersNegative Stencil on all four sides. Keep the effect dappled rather than precise by using a tapping motion and relatively little paint. Allow paint to dry.

4. HIS - Embellishments: For the "His" box, use a sponge applicator and StazOn Jet Black and Midnight Blue ink to stencil Map pattern onto a 5" x 6" piece of Australian Opal Gemstones Shimmer Sheetz. When ink is dry, cover the back of the stenciled Shimmer Sheetz with double-sided adhesive sheet. Using a paper trimmer or craft knife, straight edge, and cutting mat, cut the rectangle lengthwise into random-width strips ranging from 3/8" to 1". Adhere the strips to the sides and top of the box, alternating horizontal and vertical bands of varying lengths as shown or as you prefer.

5. HERS - Embellishments: For the "Hers" box, use a sponge applicator and StazOn Midnight Blue ink to stencil the smaller butterfly from the Butterfly Duo stencil four times onto lightly-sanded Australian Opal Gemstones Shimmer Sheetz. When ink is dry, cut out the butterflies. Embellish each butterfly with a mix of Glitter Hearts and Glitter Dots Peel-offs (Hearts in Silver on antennae and wings, Dots in Silver and Black on wings and body). Use a Power Tab to attach one butterfly to each side of the box as shown or as you prefer.

6. Options:
*Use only the Sporn Flowers Negative stencil for the "Hers" box if you don't want a contrasting pattern on the top.
*Choose colors that suit your taste and decor.
*Instead of only two, use three or more paint colors for the Map pattern Sporn Flowers.
*Go for a tone-on-tone effect, using two paint colors that are in the same family instead of two that have a lot of contrast.
*ShimmerSheetz comes in over two dozen colors, as does StazOn Ink, so you can switch to a different palette for your embellishments.

    2. So true! There's an old saying (though I don't know who said it) that sums things up for me: Give all your ideas away to make room in your head for more! The reason I loved teaching is the reason I now love designing and writing instructions - sending ideas out and watching them fly around in the hands of others.

    1. Possibilities are endless for these boxes. This for me, that for hubby, and another for daughter. And on and on.

    2. Watch out...once you start working on those boxes there's no end to the possibilities. I think they are somewhat like oversized Artist Trading Cards - four rectangles just waiting to be decorated and that additional little challenge of the top with the oval cutout in the middle... I have probably designed at least a dozen at this point, but I've been very good about sharing them and only have three at my house, not counting the three that are base coated and waiting for the Muse to visit and two more that are plain wood. I think wood burning is next.
