StencilGirl Welcomes Guest Designer Tammy Tutterow

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Hello everyone! My name is Tammy and I am so excited to join you today on the StencilGirl blog! Before I share my project, I thought I would share a little about myself... I am a wife and mom to three kids (24, 20, and 10) and one rascally Boston Terrier puppy named Cracker Jack. We live in Illinois just outside of St. Louis. I am a full-time designer, instructor, and artist. I love working with paper and fabrics using inks, stamps, and stencils. I also love creating tutorials, almost as much as I love creating. I hope you don't mind, but I have created a tutorial for you today featuring an art journal page for a pocket album. I like to call it Pocket Art!

Begin by cutting manila cardstock pieces to fit inside the divided pocket pages from your favorite pocket album.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Assemble the pieces as they will be in the album. Use washi tape to tape them together on the back. You could also work from one large piece and cut it to fit the pockets when finished. I prefer to know where my cut lines will be exactly as I am placing elements so I like to begin with my pieces cut.

Place the Random Circles stencil over the assembled piece of manila cardstock. Use an ink blending tool to apply Tumbled Glass Distress Ink to the cardstock through the stencil. Focus the ink around the edges leaving a clean spot toward the center.

Use an ink blending tool to apply Broken China Distress Ink to the manila cardstock. Focus the ink around the edges, working it in to the center even less than the Tumbled Glass Ink.

Use an ink blending tool to apply Salty Ocean Distress Ink to the manila cardstock. Focus this new ink color randomly around the edges to add brighter touches of color.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Mist water onto your hand. Flick the water onto the cardstock to create water spots in the ink.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Use a dry cloth to blot the excess water.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Mist the manila cardstock randomly with Biscotti Perfect Pearls Mist.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Blot the excess mist with a dry cloth. Dry the manila cardstock with a heat tool.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Place the Large and Small Eggs stencil along the left side of the manila cardstock. Use an ink blending tool to apply Broken China Distress Ink to the two large eggs.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Use an ink blending tool to apply Stormy Sky Distress Ink to the tip and bottom of the eggs.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Place the matching speckles of the eggs over the two large eggs. Use an ink blending tool to apply Vintage Photo Distress Ink through the stencil to add the speckles to the eggs.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Place the second set of speckles over the two large eggs. Add the speckles onto the eggs over the other speckles using an ink blending tool and Gathered Twigs Distress Ink.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Place the large egg designs back over the two large eggs. Use the brown ink left on the foam of your brown ink blending tool to add extra light shading to the eggs along the bottom and right sides of the eggs.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Apply strips of Tim Holtz Tissue Tape along the bottom edge and top left side of the page.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Add machine stitching over the tape for extra texture and interest.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Apply assorted blue Distress Inks (I used what was in my foam without re-inking) to a piece of manila cardstock. Ink an area large enough to create a background for the two birds on the Fowl Play stencil.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Mist water onto your hand. Flick the water onto the cardstock to create water spots in the ink. Use a dry cloth to blot the excess water.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Mist the manila cardstock randomly with Biscotti Perfect Pearls Mist. Blot the excess mist with a dry cloth. Dry the manila cardstock with a heat tool.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Place the Fowl Play stencil over the inked manila cardstock. Use an ink blending tool to apply Vintage Photo Distress ink through the stencil.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Re-ink the blue ink blending tool with Broken China Distress Ink. Pounce the blending tool over the larger openings in the stencil to add more blue to the wings.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Remove the stencil. Use a Black Soot and Scattered Straw Distress Ink Markers to accent the eyes and beaks.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Cut both birds out using fine tip scissors.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Use the ink already in the brown, blue, and brown blending tools to add additional touches of color. Use the brown ink blending tool along all of the edges to define the edges of the pieces and to also color the cut edges of the paper.

Use small alphabet stamps to add a sentiment with Black Archival Ink. (Quote source: http://www.amandachristian.com/2012/08/22/embracing-new-beginnings/)

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Use an ink blending tool to add a touch of Scattered Straw Distress Ink to the lower left and top right corners of the assembled page.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Use an ink blending tool to apply Vintage Photo Distress Ink to the outer edges of assembled page.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Adhere the birds to the assembled page. Try to avoid placing any pieces with fine detail over the seam in the assembled page.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Flip the assembled page over. Use a craft knife to cut through any elements adhered over the seam (ie the bird and the lower strip of Tissue Tape). Remove the washi tape holding the pieces together.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

Place the pieces in the pocket page.

Tammy Tutterow | Stencil Girl Pocket Art Page New Beginnings

How fun and easy! I love how much depth you get by layering the ink colors and stencil designs. The finished page is flat and perfect for slipping into a pocket but doesn't look flat at all! I will be making more of these pocket pages for a new art journal I am creating with some of my favorite quotes. I plan some full-page spreads like this one, but also some mix and match pages with individual art pieces in the pockets. I can't wait to make more!

    1. I can't wait to do more pages using the pockets. Some of them will be a single "page" like this one, but others I think will be mix and match. It will be a fun way to make some fun mini art.
