Stencil, Paint, Gesso, Repeat!

We're excited you are here! Welcome to the first of many of StencilGirl Creative Team posts. Our fabulous artistic team has planned projects and inspiration just for you on Tuesday and Thursdays. A drum roll please...

Hello and Happy Tuesday!  Tina Walker here today with my very first StencilGirl CreativeTeam post.  I still can't believe that I get to do this and I feel so lucky to be able to share my passion for creating with so many beautiful people.  I hope to get to know y'all better in the coming months!

For my first project, I thought it would be great to share a new Art Journal page created using the 'Church Window' stencil.  When I first saw this stencil, I immediately knew I needed it.  I wasn't sure what type of project I would be able to use it on, but I knew it needed to be in my grubby little hands.  :)

I used modeling paste over the stencil to create a raised design, then added paint and doodles to enhance the stenciled image.

When I decided I wanted to use this stencil for an Art Journal page, my original intent was to journal inside the window panes.  I thought the little pane 'squares' were perfect for journaling.  And to be honest, underneath all the layers of paint, and spray-paint, there is journaling, but I didn't really like where the page was headed.

So I pulled my big girl pants up and embraced the happy mistake and started over.  I sprayed the entire page with spray gesso and put my thinking cap on.  I repainted the background (in different colors this time), and left the window panes empty.  I liked where it was going.

The modeling paste had 'disappeared' into the background, so I lined the stencil up, over the original line, and spray the raised areas with white spray paint.  Some of the spray-paint seeped under the stencil, but I liked the imperfect look.

I decided the upper and lower parts of the page needed more of a design element, so using a Stabilo pencil, I doodled inside an  older StencilGirl Stencil Club stencil (from when I was a member several years ago) to make circle shapes.

"The eyes are the windows of the soul" is a long time favorite quote.  I thought it would be perfect for my Art Journal page, so I hand drew eyes inside the dormer section of each window.  This was now exactly the page I wanted to create.

The moral of the story??  Keep trying.  Never give up.  (Gesso is your friend).

Most of my 'cover-ups' are some of my favorite projects.  I think partially because of the hidden layers and emotion devoted into creating the finished idea, and partially because the layers add depth and texture.   Whatever the reason, they prove there is nothing as a mistake.  They are only creative opportunities.

Thank you for letting me share my love for creating with you today.  I hope you have a terrific week.

XOXO,

Tina Walker
