We sent random mermaid stencils to our team members and challenged them to get creative, even if a mermaid stencil was far and away from their go-to art tool.
Guess what?! They made a splash with a stunning scrapbook page, a perfect pillow, oceanic art journal pages, an undersea card, magnificent mixed media art, a mini-book, a notable notebook cover, and sunlight-catching charms.
Louise Nelson, Tina Walker, Gwen Lafleur, and Karen Gaunt surfed the challenge right onto the shore of this blog post and the rest of our team have projects yuo can see on their individual blogs.
Louise has a large stash of 'reject' mono-printed backgrounds that she can't quite make herself throw away, so she is always looking for opportunities to create with them. This creative brief was just perfect for doing that, using the fabulous newly released mermaid stencils. Louise has used a simple technique of heat embossing; she has used an embossing ink dauber with the stencil.
Materials: Black cardstock, Ranger embossing ink, & distress paint, American Crafts embossing powder, and Prima Marketing Gesso.
Gwen says, "I was working on this project right after I'd just taught my Boho Art Journaling class, so I thought... why not a boho mermaid?"
"If you look closely, you can see more stencils used in the collage on the main mermaid's tail: Aiden's School, Art Deco Borders, and Ornamental Floral Screen. I added other mermaids in the background just stenciled with gray Archival Ink so that they'd appear in silhouette and look like they were swimming in the background."
"I'm really happy with my boho mermaid and how the whole spread came together. So much fun!"
Karen says: "I really enjoyed playing with the mermaid stencil from Jessica Sporn. The textures and patterns she has created on this stencil as well as the masks make for some really interesting combinations and unique mermaids. Mine are playfully swimming in my mixed media lagoon.

Fabulous mermaids all around! Love, love, love them all but I'm particularly excited about Gwen's Boho Mermaid! (Could it be because I was in Gwen's Boho journaling class so I may be just a little bit biased?)
