The Circle of Life: Art Journal Spread

As the summer draws to a close, I am reminded of how much closer we are to ending another year. It seems to be an endless cycle. Celebrating the new year and settling into a routine. And then I blink and we are doing it all over again. Past, Present, and Future: life's circle that we keep filling up with pieces until there are no more left. Some of those pieces are full of painful memories and difficult times but I hope that more of them are full with joyful memories and lessons learned.
As I continue to grow older, I want each one of those pieces to represent time well spent, doing the things I love most, with the people I love. So as a new school years starts for my kiddos I am hoping to spend more time doing meaningful tasks, making beautiful art, enjoying life and stressing less. Because, let's face it, I'm not as young as I once was and there are only so many pieces left in my circle.

First, I cut a circle out of black card stock and stenciled the Boho Mandala Circle and embossed it in gold.

On the page background, I stenciled the Decorative 6-Petal Flower Screen and embossed with black soot Distress embossing powder. I sprayed the background with various inks, and stamped and embossed.

The Complementary Stencil was stenciled with molding paste and used as a template. I then cut fabric scraps and ribbon to fit each wedge. The focal image has been stamped and bits of fiber and thread were used to add texture.

The Past Present Future stencil has been stenciled in the backgroud with black gesso and outlined with a white pen.

I love the depth that is achieved by layering the stenciled pieces on top of each other.

Lastly, I doodled and splattered a bit of gesso to add some contrast in the background.

My favorite part of this journal spread was using a stencil as a template for piecing together fabric and other textiles. I just love the outcome. And I felt as though I was mock quilting in the process.
