Connect with your Favorite Art Book by Sandee Setliff

Hi everyone, Sandee here today.
As a Creative/Artist I would like to share with you a new endeavor of
self expression: knowing your archetypes.

While I love art technique books and yes, I admit to owning quite a few, Art Journal Your Archetypes by Gabrielle-Javier-Cerulli is one of my all time favorite books. Not for the art techniques that she shares but for learning what makes us art they way we do. For me it was an epiphany..my own 'aha moment' when I realized that I draw/paint/journal certain things for a reason and I was blown away. I even made a chart of my archetypes which I keep for easy referral in my
 art studio.

So the first question you may be asking is...
What is an archetype?
"An archetype is a symbolic representation of the repeated patterns of behavior that make you who you are, the driving forces behind your being. Archetypes are used in literature, script writing, marketing, branding, self-help, psychology, sociology, mythology and even the tarot."
Once you discover your archetypes ( through the 33 question quiz in the book ) you might be amazed at how many stencils that you own, that you are naturally drawn to collecting, which represent those archetypes. You will come to a better understanding of why you continually draw certain things and even in a particular style.
And since I am a continual seeker of knowledge this book is at the top of my must haves!

Even the small leaping girl stamp by Rubbermoon is an archetype, do you find yourself drawn to the female form?
Find out why in the book!

The stencils I used in order of the video and the archetypes they represent:

Fallen Leaves Stencil by Jessica Sporn

JournalArtista Stacked Books Stencil by Paula Phillips

Creative Halo Stencil by Pam Carriker

Words to Live By Stencil by Carolyn Dube

other supplies:
Rubbermoon stamp "Be an artist"
Gwen Lafleur Studio's Washi tape - Crystals
DecoArt acrylic paint

I hope you enjoy the process video I made while I played around incorporating my archetypes in my art journal. I began with a premade background (I think I must have been bored one day and just played with color because it looks pretty random, I confess.) and from there I began layering my stencils and building my story around some of my core archetypes.

Knowing what makes you unique is highly valuable to you as an art journaler.
Art journaling is a great way to express yourself using symbolic representation
where you are free to create with no rules.

Discover and embrace your archetypes!

StencilGirl Artist Paula Phillips Tutorial

Welcome everyone! My name is Paula Phillips, also known as JournalArtista.

Today I would like to share a page with you using my new Stacked Books stencil.

I started with a background of scraped paint over gesso.  I then added a few bits of a packing tape transfer through a stencil.  I used this for depth and interest in the background.  To learn about this technique, please refer to this YouTube tutorial:

Next, I covered the packing tape transfer images with Matte Medium.  This takes away the shine from the packing tape, as well as allowing the tape to be painted over.  I then collaged a few napkin images, and a picture of a pen and ink from a magazine using Matte Medium.  I added the Whimsey Script stencil in a few places, overlapping all collaged images.

Finally, I added black paint to the right side of the page and placed the Stacked Books stencil directly on top.  I quickly removed the paint from under the stencil with a baby wipe (you can also use a wet cloth), leaving the image of the stacked books in black.

At this stage the art journal page looked like this:

I realized the stacked books blended too much into the background.  Once the black paint was dry I repositioned the stencil back on top and sponged a bit of the same green and pink used in the first layer of the background.  I then used a Derwent Inktense pencil in black to outline and shade each book.  The ink splot looked a little dull so I added a layer of black paint to help it pop.

The final step was to add the words onto the stacked books spines and a whole lot of white splots with watered down white acrylic paint.

Here is the result:

Here is the before and after of the stacked books after shading and finishing touches.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, I hope you give it a try!  Show us your stacked books projects with the hashtags #iseestencilseverywhere and #stencilgirl

1700's Building Texture

Welcome all!

Paula Phillips aka JournalArtista here.  I am so happy to share with you my page using the 1700's Building Stencil  designed by the awesome Carolyn Dube.

My page started out with a layer of brown paint with a few napkins collaged on top.  I then chose this technique to apply the Golden Light Molding Paste:

I should have left the page at that, but I decided to add some deep purple.  Way too dark!  I dry brushed a bit of gesso to tone down the darkness, shown here:

I then added black marker to outline the edges of the light molding paste, using my finger to smudge a bit.

Happier with the way the texture pop'ed, I added a bit of yellow paint in the window openings.

Don't give up when you think something is too dark!  Just add a bit of gesso and work through those uglies!

Much Love,
Paula
