New Woodland and Botanical Designs From Margaret Peot

Margaret was inspired to make this 9 x 12 stencil after going back to Ohio to visit some of her old haunts. She grew up between a pond and a giant marsh, and that provided endless opportunities for play. She has been revisiting that time in her artwork—hours alone with her dog, walking along the edge of the pond, watching the frogs jump into the water

Marsh Flowers (L942)

Queen Anne’s Lace, cornflower, black-eyed Susans, thistles, those little pink lobed flowers that she never knew the name of—all the wildflowers in this 9 x 12 stencil grew in the fencerow by the swamp by Margaret's childhood home. They made their way into bouquets that she put all over the house.

Mushrooms (L943)

Margaret's next-door neighbor had a wealth of mushrooms in her woods: different sizes and shapes, glowing against the dark soil and leaves.

Sinuous Vines (L944)

Margaret made this 9 x 12 stencil because she needed a stencil that moved —that could twist across journal pages, tie things together, and break up a staid layout—while still being representative of the natural world.

Woodland Creatures 1 (L945)

Margaret was inspired to make these 9 x 12 woodland creatures stencils after working on a children’s book about nocturnal mothers and babies and what they are up to in the night while we sleep. The creatures in these stencils are not strictly nocturnal, but she wanted to show little windows into their lives. They would make a cool card set, or a forest-themed advent calendar…

Margaret's stencils are available now at stencilgirlproducts.com

Fantastic New Florals from Rae Missigman!

The inspiration for these was gathered from a wildflower garden that I visited in Washington DC. I remember that there were rows and rows of colored stalks that peeped over one another, row after row. It was their crowded space and tangled web of color that really caught my eye. And even in all of that jumbled tangle that was a garden I was able to pick out different shaped leaves, petals and stems. It was almost as if they were riding a line between realistic and imaginary in their chaotic little habitat.

I envision using these on the Gelli Plate (with acrylic paint) as masks have the power to create such beautiful layers of color and lines using this medium. I also appreciate and LOVE the mysterious and unpredictable results that come from mixing inks with masks. The fluid lines that result are always a beautiful surprise.

New Designs from Cynthia Silveri Available Now!

Cynthia has always loved poppies with their cheery red color. She is equally enamored by their seed heads after they flower—their interesting structure and shape are the inspiration for the Poppy Seed Heads and Poppy Seed Stems stencils.

The Twisted Forest stencil was a mash-up idea, combining Cynthia's Birch Forest stencil (L640) with her Fragmented Lines Columns stencil (S679) to create a play between organic lines of the tree branches with architectural formality creating dynamic movement in their juxtaposition.

New Abstract Florals and Landscapes from Jennifer Evans

Paperwhites are delicate flowers that can be grown indoors from bulbs. Similar to daffodils in structure, they are tiny blooms that appear in clusters. This stencil is reminiscent of looking closely into a gathering of blooms (upper right square shape) with a close-up of a leaf on the left and a border of stems underneath.  Experiment with using the negative space (areas around the main images) to see what kind of new designs will inspire your art.

When sketching a flower, I always examine it from all angles. This stencil looks at a sunflower 3 ways: from the side, straight on into the bloom, and underneath the bloom where the greens look like a crown before it attaches to the stem. You can experiment with different color blooms. I imagine the final product being cut apart to be utilized in other projects, or to make bookmarks.

A common carnation gets the star treatment in this stencil, which features a single bloom over a background of stems and leaves. Try your hand at lending texture to the petals with any type of collage elements, or just sketch them in with a colored pencil.

Nature lovers and landscape artists will recognize how to put this stencil to good use. The horizontal and vertical lines in this design allow for close-up studies of different terrain: rocks, hills, grasses, puddles, trails, evergreens, mountains and plains.... Or, you can combine them all into one design (see example).

This landscape with a building structure is open to many interpretations: as a waterscape (see example). Or, turn the water into rocky terrain or grassy hills. The greenery behind the building can be interpreted as hills/mountains if you prefer.

Making "Black Light" Botanicals with Sarah Gardner

It all started when I was playing around, making some ephemera/accents/focal points with some small profile botanical stencils from StencilGirl®. I was spreading white heavy body paint through the stencils onto black construction paper to create some high-contrast elements. Later on, I finished the background of a journal spread and knew how I wanted to add the text, but it needed something else. I decided to add some color to a few of my white botanical elements (Rae Missigman's "Indigo" stencil from her Botanical Wildflowers Stencil/Mask set). I used the brightest pink that was already present in my background and when I fussy cut the botanicals, that black border with the bright pink immediately reminded me of those 60's era black light posters!

So I just had to share my discovery with you! Here's the journal spread that I've created for this post.  You can see how I made it, from start to finish, in the video below!

The bright paints I used to get that "black light" effect are: Golden: Fluorescent Green, Blue, Pink and Magenta and Fluid Acrylic in Primary Magenta and Quinacridone Magenta; Charvin: Eva's Pink; Holbein: Luminous Violet and Luminous Lemon

Have fun creating some Black Light Botanicals with StencilGirl® botanical stencils! Be sure to tag me if you post on Instagram @juicy.s.art!

Juicy*S is my DJ name. I'm not a DJ. I would love to be a DJ. It's one of my fantasy dream jobs, really. I got this name when my sister, my friend, and I were slinging paint and working in our art journals, drinking wine and keeping track of the funny things we were saying on a "sign-in" sheet...just craziness. We all ended up with a DJ name that day. I started my first art blog with this name, and I've had it ever since.

I have found that being creative, that making stuff, is a very fulfilling and beneficial activity for me. Creative play, and art journaling in particular, has become my self-care practice. It's so exciting for me to share what I'm excited about, and helping others find their own creative practice is one of my goals in life!

You can find me on Instagram @juicy.s.art and my website is: Juicy*S Art
I also have a YouTube Channel and an Etsy Shop.
