StencilGirl® Art Journaling by Frieda Oxenham

This is my October project as Guest Designer but I’m writing this in late August, a time when summer is almost over and autumn is coming ever closer. This is also the time when I cling on to what is still left of all that summer glory; the last flowers, the final rays of sunshine, having coffee on the patio and wearing summer clothes. I always wish I could somehow hold on to all those delights to get me through the often cold, wet and snowy Scottish winters. The small booklet I’m sharing with you today was the result of that wish. I imagine leafing through it regularly while cuddled up in front of the stove while the weather rages outside.

Here is the tutorial:

1.      I started with a 4 x 4” art journal by Art by Marlene. It has 15 pages of 300gsm weight and is ring-bound. Before starting I carefully removed all the pages, apart from the covers.

2.      Give the covers a few layers of gesso on both inside and outside.

3.      Gesso both sides of all pages.

4.      Add colour to one side of the pages by using a 5 x 5” gelli plate and a selection of acrylic paints. Take partial prints instead of covering the entire pages. Once dry do the same on the other side of all pages. Repeat on both sides of the covers.

5.      Using stencil Phlox Mask and a selection of colours, stencil flowers onto both sides of the pages as well as the covers.

6.      Repeat step 5 using only Titanium white acrylic paint.

7.      Add green leaves to both sides of the pages as well as the covers by stencilling with different green acrylic paints and using stencils Duck Nesting and Tall Flowers.

8.      Glue on postage stamps featuring flowers and flower/garden quotations to selected pages.

9.      Stencil on more flowers using stencil Daisy-May Tile,  and using a variety of colours of Stencil Butter with a palette knife.

10.  Using permanent black markers, outline the flowers from step 9 and the green leaves from step 7

11.  Spray random pages with a variety of colours of Perfect Pearls Mist (or any other mica spray) through the same stencil as used in step 9.

12.  Outline the pages with gold paint marker.

13.  Put the pages back in the ring binder in your preferred order.

Using StencilGirl® Products to Create a Beautiful Vintage Book Cover

Hi everyone! Elizabeth Tichvon here! I’m so excited to be a Guest Designer today on StencilGirl® Talk. As most of you know, StencilGirl® carries some of the most beautifully unique stencils created by some very talented artists for artists like you and me. If you haven’t visited the StencilGirl® shop, I encourage you to!

If you’re familiar with my art, you know I love florals and am passionate about vintage papers. In this tutorial, I’ll be using these beautiful stencils from the StencilGirl® line to create a vintage book cover, using a variety of heavy body paints:
Wendy Brightbill's Daisy Daisy Stencil
Wendy Brightbill's Peony Blooms Stencil
Cecilia Swatton's Longwood Floral's Stencil
Sandra Venus' Phlox Mask

I’m really excited about this project because it’s a fun way to create something beautiful out of just a few art and vintage supplies, and I know you’ll love it too...so let’s create!

Frieda Oxenham: Art Journaling with StencilGirl® Stencils

Another year has passed and a new one looms. We are now getting used to the uncertainty all around us concerning many different issues and as we have little control about any of them perhaps the only thing we can do is hope for the best and carry on doing what makes us happy! So I want to wish you a very creative 2022! I’m very happy to be invited back here by StencilGirl® Products to share what I do with their wonderful stencils.

Here is the tutorial for this month’s spread:

1.     Gesso 2 pages in an art journal, adding Lindy’s Flat Magical powder to the white gesso. I used the colour Tangerine

2.     While the gesso is still wet, press the large stencil from the June 2021 StencilClub into it to make an impression.

3.     Scrape on paints of your choice randomly over the pages using a palette knife or key card and with the same stencil as in step 2 remove the paints with a baby wipe.

4.     Repeat step 3 with a different paint colour (yellow in my case).

5.     Colour areas of the pages with Distress Crayons (I used Salty Ocean and Cracked Pistachio) and remove the colour through the same stencil as in step 2 using a baby wipe.

6.     Stencil on text randomly with black acrylic paint using stencil S827 Vintage Ledger Scripts Small.

7.     Stencil on small flowers with red and orange acrylic paint using stencil S890 Phlox Mask.

8.     Using soft gel medium glue down the collaged images (in my case a portrait of Frida Kahlo and the poppies

9.     Using a mixture of dark green and black acrylic paint stencil on the tree image (spire) from stencil L867 Spire and Flowers  to the left hand page using a cosmetic wedge

10.  Stencil on little flowers using a variety of colours using the same stencil as in step 9 as well as the stencil from step 7.

11.  Using the leaf mask/stencil from stencil L867 Spire and Flowers, add leaves to the pages as shown using dark green paint and then put the vein part of the leaf on top and add gold embossing paste with a palette knife.

12.  Spray gold mica spray paint through the stencil L867 onto the tree shape and add some to the dress too.

13.  Glue on quotation as shown. As far as I can discover it is anonymous but let me know if you know better

14.  Using black and white permanent markers as well as a black Stabilo All pencil outline images and text as desired. Add flowers to Frida’s dress

15.  Glue on  flower postage stamps as shown

16.  Edge the pages with a blue stamp pad.

New Designer! New Stencils & Masks by Sandra Venus

Sandra Venus has been working as a creative for the past two decades. She is a mixed-media artist, product designer, (former) architect, and teacher known for her collection of New England-inspired home goods and artwork.

StencilGirl® is excited to showcase these 2 large and one small stencils designs.

Sandra Venus' Spire & Flowers Stencil is made up of four different botanicals from a New England garden: Rosebuds, Rose leaf, Daisy, and the tall Foxtail Lily (spire). Use these images to layer botanicals as an underpainting, to make collage paper for your art journal, greeting cards, or stand-alone stenciled wall art.

The Phlox Mask can be used to cover a larger canvas or paper with a repeating background pattern for botanical-themed art. Add a color to your substrate before using this mask to create more interest and depth to your artwork.

The Pine Needles Mask is a delicate and detailed interpretation of the forest floor.  Layer this mask with several shades of any color to create depth for an underpainting or to create mixed-media paper for an art journal. This mask also makes a beautiful, simple pattern when used on its own to create Winter themed paper crafts.
