Stenciled Gift Bag

Turn a paper bag to an elegant gift bag!

October is an important month in our family. We are celebrating my mother’s birthday. This time I will put my present into this decorated gift bag which I have created from a simple paper bag. This is a super easy project. You will need only a few supplies and a little trick with a beautiful stencil, but in the end, it will turn out into an elegant gift bag. Let me show you the process itself step-by-step. Let’s get started!

Stencils I used: Terri Stegmiller’s Stepping Stone #1 Stencil

1.                  For this project I used the following supplies: a brown paper bag, scrap paper, cardstock (brown, pink and mauve), Sharpie/paint markers (pink and mauve), contour liner acrylic paint (sparkling gold), glue, ultrafine glitter (brown), glitter tape, organza ribbon and some rhinestones (brown).

2.                 First, it is important to attach the stencil to the cardstock temporarily, since at the end you want to achieve precise results. I used some washi tape for this. Then use water based glue (for the protection of your beautiful stencil) and cover the pattern of the stencil with glue – I used an old plastic card at this step. I suggest you to work quickly and prepare some lukewarm water in the sink in advance so you can clean your stencil immediately after you used it.

3.                 After you have removed your stencil and the washi tape, quickly pour ultrafine glitter onto the pattern and let it dry. Wash your stencil before the glue dries on it.

4.                 When the glue is completely dried, trace the pattern of the stencil using the Sharpies and the gold contour liner acrylic paint. Let them dry.

5.                  Use some glitter tape and organza ribbon and wrap them around the layered paper scraps. Trace and cut some flower patterns of the stencil from cardstock and glue them onto the bag. To make it more elegant you can put some rhinestones into the middle of the flowers.

6.                  For the final step doodle leafy branches around the main part – use the pattern of the Stepping Stone stencil as an inspiration.

Stenciling Snow with Glitter

I know some of you have already had a sneak peek of this season’s white stuff. However hopefully for most, this post is the first snowfall of the season! While I can certainly wait for winter to arrive, I couldn’t wait to begin several projects for the upcoming holidays. It all started last week as I was paging through a popular home décor catalog. I spied a lovely framed glittery snowflake print selling for $199! I knew I could make something similar for way less using my snowflake stencil and supplies already on hand. My replica along with a transformed dollar store saint candle is pictured to left. If you haven’t tried glitter with your stencil stash I highly recommend it. The results are gorgeous. And snowflakes are perfect no matter which winter holidays you celebrate! Here’s what I started with:

SUPPLY LIST:

snowflake stencil
craft glue
silver and gold glitter
plain white tags
cardstock size of frame
white gift bag

Cosmetic sponge and paint brush
(not pictured)
Fabric for wine bag (not pictured)
 

My process for all of the stenciling projects pictured at the end of this post was similar. I used a tacky glue which I applied either with a cosmetic sponge or a paintbrush. I was very careful in my application so the glue did not get under the stencil. (I did try using a plastic card to squeegee the glue across the stencil, but personally my end results were better with either the sponge or paintbrush.)

  

Next, I lifted the stencil and poured a generous amount of glitter over the glue. I let it set for about 5 minutes before shaking the excess glitter off.

Here are all of my completed snowflake projects. I sewed a simple wine bag and stenciled a glittery snowflake on the front. I also stenciled the dollar store saint candle, gift bag, tag and of course what started it all, the framed snowflake picture. I hope this post sparks some ideas for quick and simple projects you can make with stencils either to keep or give as gifts this holiday season. Cheers!

Easter Inspiration

Just in time for Easter!

Guest Designer,  Judi Kauffman, made more stenciled Shimmer Sheetz Easter egg projects! The Circle Accordion card includes bunny stamps from Magenta, dies from Karen Burniston at Elizabeth Craft Designs. She used faux fur and part of a plastic mesh bag for grass on the gift bag and side-fold card, plus papers from Karen Foster Design and Graphic 45. Festive Stenciled Bags!

Hi! Mary Nasser here! It’s nearly Valentine’s Day, so I was inspired to make Valentine’s gift bags!

I started using Margaret Applin’s HeartSwirl stencil, but you’ll see how I quickly used 3 more stencils

to decorate gift bags for other holidays, too!

For this project, I used white paper lunch bags I had in my kitchen. 

I trimmed the top of each lunch bag with Fiskars Border Punches.

(I used the Threading Water Border Punch and Apron Lace Border Punch for my gift bags in this post.)

After punching the border along the top, I folded the top of the bag down.

Then I turned the bag over, used painters tape to keep my stencil in place, then pounced on a light layer of acrylic paint

with an ink sweeper. I kept the paint light so that it would not seep under the stencil.

Here's the front of the bag to be filled with treats:

For the back, I stamped a tag and added a ribbon: 

I was having too much fun to stop there, so I made another one, using the same process.

This time I used a November StencilClub stencil designed by Joanne Sharpe:
