Mask it Journal by Sunila & Aditi

Hello,

Hope you've had a great start to 2021 and have a crafty year ahead. Today we are back with another video project for you all. Inspired by the theme- Masks we decided to create a layered journal page using masking tape, stencils and acrylics.

We chose our black journal for this one and love the result we've achieved.

Here's a look at our page

Here's the video tutorial to create this:

This was a fun play in our journal. Add strips of masking tape, and play with paint with a brayer. Layer light to dark with Carnation, Heather, and Magenta;  and add hints of Turquoise and Lemon for the pop.

We've used two stencils with the same colors, adding layers to our page. The stencils used are-  L663- Van Vorst by Nathalie KalbachAugust 2019 Stencil Club

For our focal, we used the Butterfly Mask and Stencil (Stencil Club March, 2020) and fussy cut it.

This freedom in play is what we enjoy the most in our journals.

Supplies used:

Let's talk about "stencil masks."

Hi and welcome!

It’s Peg and Shel. We are so glad you found us today! Let's talk about masks.

Shel says, "Rather than thinking about face coverings like we did all of 2020, or making masquerade masks or Mardi Gras masks, or even talking about the figurative masks we all hide behind in our daily lives. Peg and I decided to talk about the definition and unique properties of 'stencil masks'.

We get LOTS of questions and need for clarifications between what is a stencil vs what is a mask. I like to describe it this way. Think of a stained glass window. The stencil is the black part. The mask is the colors. Inny vs outy. And masks are probably my favorite type of stencil! So I made a quick and easy art journal page using several of my favorite masks from some favorite designers like Trish McKinney, Valerie Sodjin, and Traci Bautista.

Peg is glad you are here because she wants to share a canvas painting she did using Stencil Masks from StencilGirl®. Both Shel and Peg love masks and These are some of the best we have seen.

For the canvas, the masks are all are designed by Trish McKenney and have the look of all things found in nature, intertwining vines and leaves. So beautiful!

Peg used the large wisteria mask to create the background and filled in with a few dripping moss masks. She followed up with a club set of leaf masks to create the grapevine look. using the leaf masks she then added outlines in white to enhance their visibility on the canvas.

Then several layers of iZink glazes were used to add depth and additional color.

If you don't like the shiny surface that you achieve using the glazes, add matte medium to the surface. I happen to like it on this piece although it make it hard to take pictures. Anyway, it would be fun to try this using different colors and make a seasonal choice in a spring and summer pallet.
Here is a short video shot in the studio while working on this.

I AM the new collection from Cat Kerr

Oh, the art you will create with these three new masks designed by Cat Kerr.

She has a tutorial video for you too!

Cat Kerr's first-ever Masks are inspired by the Sylvia Plath quote from The Bell Jar.
It reads "I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. I am, I am, I am."
I am, I am, I am... Cat Kerr's heart answers with the collection of words on this I AM Words Mask and she hopes yours will too.

The I AM Collage Mask was designed by Cat Kerr features a collection of numbers, flower bursts, entwined loops, and geometric shapes all in one stencil.

The Tottering Shapes Mask,  is a wonky yet cool design, perfect for art journaling, card making, mono-printing, and mixed media.

Beach Grass and Bare Wisteria Stencil Masks by Trish McKinney

"Veiled" Artwork by Trish McKinney

Wild Sea Oats, a seagrass that grows along the North and South Carolina coastline, inspired Trish McKinney to design these stencil masks.

These are stencil masks. Here is an example of where the paint goes:

Here is a quick video tutorial for using the Beach Grass stencils to paint a canvas:

Bare wisteria vines, in all their chaotic elegance, were the inspiration for Trish's new stencil masks. Don't you just love the possibilities that graceful loop gives your artwork? We do!

Above are stencil masks. Here is an example of where the paint goes:
