'Live Gently' a mixed media Layout by Sunila and Aditi (aka Dots to Lines)

Hello,

We are so happy to be back on the blog as guest designers. It's always a pleasure creating for StencilGirl Products®.

Today we've played with layers and stencils and created a fall inspired mixed media style layout. We have a little step by step pictorial for you all as well.

Here's a look at the Layout:

Step 1: We started off with a white 12"x12" cardstock and Lindy's magicals. We smooshed the green colour on the background and dried it. We then mixed our yellow and raspberry with 3D gel medium and spread it in layers with a mini brayer. This gave us the texture and dimension.

Step 2: With the colours still wet, we used our first stencil- Arrows within Rounds by Andrew Borloz (S797) and rubbed in with a baby wipe. This took away the colour from our base and left a nice stencil imprint.

Step 3: We used our custom yellow and raspberry texture paste and spread it through our next stencil- Art Deco Fairview by Natalie Kalbach (L755).

Step 4: Next, we added splatter using the same colours, but only mixed with water this time.

Step 5: For the next layer we used a stencil from the ATC Mixup Set by Pam Carriker (L651) and drew in with a white pen. From the same set, we used another pattern with black ink and brought in our contrast.

Step 6: With our background layers in place, we then coloured a few die cuts, picket out elements from our stash and created a composition to complete the layout.

Here are a few close ups

Supplies
2. Lindy's Magicals
3. 3D Gel Medium
4. Leaves die cuts
5. Thread
6. Fussy cut paper elements
7. Cuts2Luv Badges
8. Micro Beads

We hope you've enjoyed this as much as we did creating it! Have a wonderful time ahead!

Heartfelt Thanks to Our 20-21 Creative Team!

Greetings and thanks for stopping by today!

Throughout the unexpected hardships of this past year, these skilled artists put stencils and paint to the surfaces of fabric, paper, wood, and plastic, sharing art projects filled with beauty and grace.

They are the real deal and let their love of art shine brightly for all to partake.

I'm Carol Baxter and I am privileged to manage the team. If you have been reading StencilGirl Talk for the past year, you may be able to match the artwork in the thumbnails below to one of our talented Creative Team members.

Did you guess? A) Sunila & Aditi Mahajan aka Dots 2 Lines, B) Linda Edkins Wyatt, C) Sue Plumb, D) Shel C, E) Peg Robinson, F) Natalie May, G) Geri Beam, and H) Wendy Baysa.

Here's a recap of my favorite projects from each of them. Don't worry. The stencil project links open in new windows so you won't miss a post as you dive into art.

Art journaling and scrapbooking together, Sunila & Aditi Mahajan are the mother and daughter duo who bring us stenciled projects replete with layers bursting off the surface. Their Shadowbox Keyholder is a lovely example of their art.

Prancing hooves, the caress of butterfly wings, a tulip on fire with color, and clown to gather it all in. Linda Edkins Wyatt has a gift for color as you'll see in her art but Circus 19 Dream: A Mixed Media Pastiche is a fine composition.

I do believe I would recognize Sue Plumb's style in a blind show. I finally had to toss a coin between what I finally chose and Art is Good for You because projects for StencilGirl made choosing a fave practically impossible. Graceful blooms adorn many of Sue's artworks but I think the way she treated a single stencil as the focal in The Real Deal is magical. Her process is stepped out beautifully too.

When asked to interpret a theme, I felt pure delight to open an email and find out what the duo of Shel C and Peg Robinson (Art Joy of Sharing) dreamed up using the same stencils.

What Do You Have to Wear to Feel Dressed Today? Shel C had my heart at earrings! If earrings make you feel ready to take on the day, look no further than this post.

One of the best things about looking at art is falling in love with the details, how Peg Robinson was able to make me feel as if the heart was paused between beats by the way she shaded and texturized it in her art journal spread. Check out Passages - Doors to New Experiences.

We Carry You, Natalie May's homage to her grandmother moved me to tears. I love the idea of writing a little story on the back of artwork such as this so when it is handed down it sparks even more memories. Get carried away here.

Whist I adore Geri Beam's fabric and mixed media play, her Circus Tea Cart caused my jaw to hit the floor and stay there for some moments. How she stenciled it is stepped-out right here.

My Pastiche by Wendy Baysa is Wendy doing Wendy and I applaud her! There's a lot of fun to take in as you soar through her art journal spread that gives the viewer permission to grow and isn't that one of the pleasures of art journaling?

Mary Beth Shaw and I give our heartfelt thanks to Sunila, Aditi, Sue, Shel, Peg, Geri, Wendy, Nat, and Linda for always bringing their A-Game.

You'll see them back as StencilGirl Talk guests!

Happily, you can always find them creating something new on their own platforms.

Stenciled Child's Play Day Dress by Sunila & Aditi

Hello and welcome,

Today it is Sunila and Aditi here to share our 'Wearable' creation with you. This theme is always fun because it helps us use our stencils to create something fun that can be a part of the wardrobe. Last year we created and embroidered a skirt we still love.

This time we decided to fancy up our little one's dress to create a fun play day dress.

Here's a look at it.

Here's a quick video sharing the process:

We've used the Play Everyday Dress Up L599 stencil by Cat Kerr. We took an imprint of the image and the phrases on our dress by dabbing Black and Blue Acrylic paint on the front and back of the dress.

We then used beads and sequins to highlight the dress, some words and the strings of the swing. This adds a pop and uplifts our dress.

On the back, we decided to merely stencil acrylic paint and achieve a shadow effect scene.

Supplies used
Dina Wakley- Black and Night Acrylic
Beads, Sequins

We hope you've enjoyed our creation!
Happy crafting!
Hugs,

Matisse Inspired Journal by Sunila & Aditi

Hello,

Hope you are well! Today we are back with another tutorial for you! This month's theme Pastiche is very interesting. It allows us the freedom to imitate the style of another artist.

For our project, we were inspired by Henri Matisse's artwork. We love the use of vibrant colors and collage layers.

We decided to create a journal page and here's a look at our page.

Here's the video tutorial to create this page:

We wanted to use stencil layers to mimic the cut-out effect of his paintings. We created a vibrant background with paint and stencil layers. We've used the following stencils- M232 Twisting Beach Grass by Trish mcKinney, S325 Seoul Night by Daniella Woolf, S509 Pixels by Rae Missigman, L736 Leafy Doodle Border by Valerie Sjodin and L764 Celtic Sprirals Mask by Valerie Sjodin.

We added our Matisse Signature focal using the stencil L725 A Conversation with Matisse by Carolyn Dube.

Supplies used:

Dina Wakley Acrylics- Lemon, Cheddar, Sedona, Ruby, Olive, Evergreen, Lapis

Hope you've enjoyed this project!

Hugs,

Sunila & Aditi

Mask it Journal by Sunila & Aditi

Hello,

Hope you've had a great start to 2021 and have a crafty year ahead. Today we are back with another video project for you all. Inspired by the theme- Masks we decided to create a layered journal page using masking tape, stencils and acrylics.

We chose our black journal for this one and love the result we've achieved.

Here's a look at our page

Here's the video tutorial to create this:

This was a fun play in our journal. Add strips of masking tape, and play with paint with a brayer. Layer light to dark with Carnation, Heather, and Magenta;  and add hints of Turquoise and Lemon for the pop.

We've used two stencils with the same colors, adding layers to our page. The stencils used are-  L663- Van Vorst by Nathalie KalbachAugust 2019 Stencil Club

For our focal, we used the Butterfly Mask and Stencil (Stencil Club March, 2020) and fussy cut it.

This freedom in play is what we enjoy the most in our journals.

Supplies used:

Shadow Box Key Holder by Sunila & Aditi

Hello,

Hope you are all well! Sunila and Aditi here with a mixed media home decor project.

While we were brainstorming what to create (since we've done too many trays, and coasters and all those things), we found a box at home. This is supposed to be a napkin holder, however, we decided to create something else.

We changed the position a bit and decided to turn it into a shadow box and create a key holder. The idea of the shadow box seemed useful because that space can hold bills, posts, and anything else that we'd like apart from the keys. An easy solution that can be hung by the door.

Here's a look at our final piece:

We were inspired to use our new nature theme stencils for this project. That made it easy to choose our color palette and create a little garden of sorts.

If you'd like to create one for your home, here's the video tutorial:

This project involves layering stencils with texture pastes and stenciled focal elements. We've used the following stencils- L736 Leafy Doodle Border by Valerie Sjodin , L712 Lattice Medallion by Kristie Taylor, S482 Bare Branch Thicket by Trish McKinney; all these are in keeping with our nature theme.

Here are a few close-ups:
