'Live Gently' a mixed media Layout by Sunila and Aditi (aka Dots to Lines)

Hello,

We are so happy to be back on the blog as guest designers. It's always a pleasure creating for StencilGirl Products®.

Today we've played with layers and stencils and created a fall inspired mixed media style layout. We have a little step by step pictorial for you all as well.

Here's a look at the Layout:

Step 1: We started off with a white 12"x12" cardstock and Lindy's magicals. We smooshed the green colour on the background and dried it. We then mixed our yellow and raspberry with 3D gel medium and spread it in layers with a mini brayer. This gave us the texture and dimension.

Step 2: With the colours still wet, we used our first stencil- Arrows within Rounds by Andrew Borloz (S797) and rubbed in with a baby wipe. This took away the colour from our base and left a nice stencil imprint.

Step 3: We used our custom yellow and raspberry texture paste and spread it through our next stencil- Art Deco Fairview by Natalie Kalbach (L755).

Step 4: Next, we added splatter using the same colours, but only mixed with water this time.

Step 5: For the next layer we used a stencil from the ATC Mixup Set by Pam Carriker (L651) and drew in with a white pen. From the same set, we used another pattern with black ink and brought in our contrast.

Step 6: With our background layers in place, we then coloured a few die cuts, picket out elements from our stash and created a composition to complete the layout.

Here are a few close ups

Supplies
2. Lindy's Magicals
3. 3D Gel Medium
4. Leaves die cuts
5. Thread
6. Fussy cut paper elements
7. Cuts2Luv Badges
8. Micro Beads

We hope you've enjoyed this as much as we did creating it! Have a wonderful time ahead!

Soul Mending Mixed Media Poetry by Sunila & Aditi

Hello,

Today we're sharing our project inspired by the Stencil Poetry theme. Poetry and art for us always go hand in hand. Many times, we either create an art project and then write about it or vice versa.

We've created a mixed media layout and we were inspired by Aditi's poem 'Soul-Mending' from her recent book 'On The Other Side'. For the project, a newer version of the poem was written and then we created this layout. We'll share the two poems below as well!

Here's a look at the layout:

Here's the brief process of creating this layout:

Step 1: Choose a few stencils for the layers. Sprays colors through them on a piece of white cardstock. This becomes the pattern paper for the base. We've used- L 708 (Mod City Country Abstract by Cynthia Silveri), L 726 (It's Time to Play by Carolyn Dube), L 712 (Lattice Medallion by Kristie Taylor).

Step 2: We used the stencil L 698 (Hexagons Mini Printmaking by Ann Butler) with a black Uni-ball pen to draw some abstract hexagons on the printed paper. We also drew a few puzzle pieces and cut them out.  You could use dies and cut shapes for the base.

Step 3: We then arranged and stitched our hexagons onto a base white cardstock. The loose threads add to the effect we were looking for.

Step 4: Arrange the puzzle pieces. Use foam tape for varying depth and adding dimension.

Step 5: Time to add embellishments. At this stage, we picked out some chipboard pieces, colored them with metallic acrylic paints and waxes. We also layered some flowers, die cuts and feathers. These elements went well with the poem and we talk about this add the end of the post:)! Our poem is the focal point, so we typed it out on a piece of pattern paper.

Step 6: Complete it with sequins.

And that's it! We really enjoy making layouts in this way.

Here's the poem and how we were inspired by it.

Soul- Mending Version 1.0

Fixing broken pieces of your soul,
is not like joining pieces of a puzzle.
Sometimes you need to hurt,
to take it all in.
Once you’re done hurting,
pick them up piece by piece
and mend your soul.
It won’t be the same,
The scars will be there,
But you’ll been one again.

Soul-Mending Project Version 1.1

Fixing broken pieces of your soul,
is not like joining pieces of a puzzle.
The same pieces that once fit together,
may no longer do so.
Sometimes you need to hurt,
to take it all in.
And, some pieces need to be discarded,
when sifting through them.
Once you’re done hurting,
pick them up piece by piece
and mend your soul.
Sew them and stitch them back again.
The threads you use will remind you,
of how you patched it all together.
It won’t be the same,
The scars will be there,
But you’ll been one again.

We were inspired by the idea of the soul being fragments (our different patterned hexagons) and puzzle pieces. When you mend them, they do leave gaps, and necessarily don't fit back together. We used thread to stitch them together, with varying patterns as it's never the same. The Deer spirit reminds us to be gentle and kind with ourselves through this process. The flowers remind us about the idea of blooming and then drying, falling, yet the seeds blossom into a flower again. The color palette we used: Teal, Greens, Mustard(Gold) all speaks to us of soul renewal, of spring, of fixing.

Mixed Media Layout- Fill it with circles by Sunila and Aditi

Hello,

Hope you've had a fantastic start to 2020! Today on the blog, we, Sunila & Aditi are sharing a mixed media layout using our StencilGirl Stencils. This month, we're inspired by the theme- Fill it with circles.

Here's a look at our layout:

We'll run you through the process of this layout, step by step.

Step 1: This was an accident :)! For a different project, we'd sprayed a lindy's spray through the stencil. We used L714, Tapestry by KristieTaylor. We didn't want to waste the spray color residue on the stencil and so we flipped it onto a piece of white cardstock, twice side by side. The result was this fascinating print which made for a perfect background for the layout.

Step 2: For the circle layers, it's time to prepare a page. Layer one stencil over the other, and using two colors, spray through them. L238, Spheres by Michelle Ward as the base and L577, Pomegranate Seeds Grape and Apple by Valerie Sjodin on top of it.

The end result looks like this

Step 3: Using circle punches, or dies, cut of circles and rings of various sizes.

Step 4: Time to work on the composition. Arrange the focal picture and the curve circles around it. When happy, use foam tape to stick them. This adds dimension.

Step 5: Pick out and layers other elements for the layout. We've chosen some die cut leaves, a chipboard frame, and microbeads.

Step 6: Complete it with splatter or the colors used and a title or sentiment.

That's it! We found this to be a super easy and quick technique. Below are some close-ups of the layout!

Lindy's Sprays used:
  • Rudolph's Nose Red
  • Marigold Yellow orange
  • Poinciana Red Flame
  • Hag's Wart Orange
  • Yellow Roses of Texas

 Hope you've enjoyed this pictorial!
Hugs,

Honouring Antoni Gaudi and Nature by Sunila & Aditi Mahajan

"Nothing is Art if it does not come from nature."
~Antonio Gaudi

Hello everyone,

Sunila & Aditi (aka Dots to Lines) here, with our first post as Creative Team Members for StencilGirl® Talk! We are super thrilled and excited to be sharing our art with you all!

This month, we were inspired by the theme of "In Honor of" and we have created a mixed media style layout.

We are honouring the famous Architect Antoni Gaudi, along with Art and Mother Nature. Gaudi relied on nature and believed in the connection between art and nature, and his architecture and art depict this. We were inspired in particular by Casa Batllo, in Barcelona, Spain. In our layout, we have used two images of Casa Batllo- one at Dawn/Sunrise and one at Dusk/Sunset. We did this to showcase the cycle of nature, the cycle of life and draw a connection with the art.

on our layout with texture paste as well as inks.  These to us were representations of gothic style as well as added the element of abstractness that we were looking to create.

We have represented the abstract mosaic art on the building, using abstract shapes in our layout. When you look at the building from a distance, the art appears as creepers and flowers crawling on the walls. We have hence used ferns and flowers as well in our layering. We have played with Yellow, Orange, Red, and a deeper pink/purple tone, to represent the Sunrise and Sunset.

Gaudi said  "There are no straight lines or sharp corners in nature. Therefore, buildings must have no straight lines or sharp corners." We've represented this by having distressed edges on our paper, by breaking the form and curling paper, not having defined corners, and our general form of the layout!

We really hope to have inspired you all and to have done justice in honoring an architect, art and nature!
