I’d like to start by thanking StencilGirl Products for choosing me to be one of their Guest Designers for the
month of March.
I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to be asked, as it truly is an honor.
I created this piece for the cover of my 2016 Art Journal, along with a short tutorial of my creative process.

I created this piece for the cover of my 2016 Art Journal, along with a short tutorial of my creative process.
I purchased
a heavy blank cardboard journal from one of our local craft stores.
Next I prepped both sides of the cover with two coats of Basic Gesso.
This is to insure you have a good surface to work on.

While the
second coat of Gesso is still drying I started working the background using
spray ink and acrylic paint,
blocking in the areas of color I wanted behind my stencil.

Next I start
my layering process, for this project I chose Celestial Grove.
This is the
fun part! I’ve added tissue paper, scrapbook papers, and a few photos that I
pulled from my files.
I also felt like the piece needed more depth so I
again used my stencil, but this time with molding paste for depth.
A matte medium was used between each layer, and there were a lot of them.

When I was satisfied with my design I used a
two-part crackle, but you can use whatever you like to give it an antique look.
Next I painted back into my piece for shadow and depth with acrylic paint.

Finally, I drew back into my project adding more
details with the ink.
This makes the images pop and adds to the depth of the piece.
Then it was finished with a satin varnish.
