Art Journaling with StencilGirl® Stencils

Hi everyone! I am so excited to be here on the StencilGirl® blog again today as a guest designer. My name is Niamh Baly and I am a Primary (elementary) school teacher from Tasmania, Australia, a content creator and mum to two gorgeous girls. I am also stencil addict! Stencils are such an amazing tool to help produce fabulous artwork and are so simple to use. They are one of the most important tools that I use in my art journal pages, and nearly every page I create has a stenciled image or texture on it.

In this project we will be using stencils to create a textured and layered background using a reductive technique called ghosting. I apply a thin layer of acrylic paint to the surface of my gessoed page, then place a stencil over the top and with a damp wet wipe, wipe away the excess paint. It is really important once you have completed one layer, to let the layer dry (or use a heat tool), as to apply more than one layer – you need to make sure each layer is dry and permanent.

Text is so important to me in my art journal pages, and being able to ‘word shop’ with the StencilGirl® stencils is so important to me. I can go through all the amazing word stencils and come up with my own phrases to capture what I want to say on my pages. The unfinished stencil is one of my most used stencils in my stash as I can use the text and textures to help finish and refine my pages.

Here is a close up of the details in this page:

  1. Thank you for doing a video of your process! By watching this, I feel more confident to follow your "recipe" but to put my own spin on my project. My mind is already thinking...thanks for the inspiration!
