Mermaid Watercolor & Mixed Media with Gina Lee Kim

Hello dear artist friends & family!
What an honor & a thrill it is to be here. When Mary Beth Shaw & her team asked me to create art using beautiful StencilGirl Products, the answer was and always will be an enthusiastic yes!

And out of my enthusiasm, I ended up filming not one but 3 instructional videos. Please enjoy the first tutorial:
my watercolor and mixed-media approach to using stencils…..mermaid style :)

To summarize today’s project, here are the major steps:
Step 1) Gather art materials and choose your mermaid stencils.

Step 2) Pre-make stencil pages by applying light modeling paste or watercolor ground with a palette knife.
Let images dry and set aside.

Step 3) Cut journal page signature to make ocean wave flaps
and begin painting a sunset sky with warm watercolors.

Step 4) Paint the ocean with several shades of cool blue watercolors. Let dry.

Step 5) Paint directly onto stenciled mermaids with watercolor.
Note: paste/ground will absorb a lot of pigment at first….glaze and repeat to achieve right color.

Step 6) Carefully cut out mermaids and glue all collage elements to journal page.

Optional) Add iridescence to the mermaids with glitter paste &/or metallic acrylic paint.

I hope you enjoyed today’s art lesson and my watercolor approach. Please stay tuned for more video tutorials using StencilGirl Products. I will announce them via my instagram account and will feature them on my blog.

Thank you again for having me here today!

Warmly,
Gina
