May 2016 StencilClub Inspiration!

Our team created very different projects with this month's StencilClub stencils, "In the Garden" designed by Teri Stegmiller.

See for yourself :

Hi! Mary Nasser here to share
what I've been creating with the May 2016 StencilClub stencils!

I'm having fun using them inside and outside my art journals!

The mini 4" x 4" stencil is SUPER for creating textured backgrounds!
After applying a layer of white gesso onto my DLP 2015 journal cover,

I added layers of pink and blue acrylics through this mini stencil everywhere!

Once that dried, I added black gesso to create the number 2015 repeatedly.
Lastly, I added a variety of adhesive labels!

I left the back cover with just the background because I loved it so much!
Below is a detail:

I also had fun playing with the medium 6" x 6" stencil inside my art journal.
For this art journal spread, I used the medium stencil on my Gelli Arts plate
and created a monoprint that I collaged onto the pages!

Below is a detail:

You are going to love these stencils!!

Janet Here...My Turn!
Just a quick visit showing you what I did
with a spread in my Daily last month...

Both the 4x4 and the 6x6 were used here.
Along with Mary Beth's numbers from StencilClub's December 2015 Stencils
and Lizzie Mayne's Aztec Sun Stencil.

The 4x4 makes a nice textured border below.

And I squeezed in a small canvas as a gift for a friend....

I used all 3 sizes of stencils on this one.

As well as Carolyn Dube's Jumbo Vintage Typewriter Stencil for the BE.

I went for a more 'painterly' style on that flower border.
It's so much fun to play!
Hope you will enjoy playing with these
May StencilClub stencils by Terri Stegmiller.

Carol chiming in.

Terri Stegmiller's stencil designs for May StencilClub are sunny and sweet that I want to carry around the happy feeling they give me.
I always have a notebook to scribble down ideas so I grabbed a blank one that started out with an orange cover. Took forever for the gesso to dry. Maybe next time I will just work with the notebook color but I am pleased with how this garden grew.
Front:

I used markers on the pink flowers and for the stamens on the yellow flowers. I have mechanical crayons from Faber Castell -- I used them around the orange circular ones and the body of of the yellow flowers. Just a little dimension.
Back:

No one in my writing group is going to mistake this notebook for theirs.

Next up, it's Gwen with my take on this month's fabulous StencilClub collection; I loved them as soon as I took them out of the package. I had visions of doing something wonderfully Spring-like with bright colors and maybe a bit of whimsy. So naturally, I did the exact opposite. LOL. I was taking an online class from Andy Skinner and couldn't resist using this month's stencils for that project. The bright and whimsical stuff will come soon, but for now, we're going a bit darker and grungier.

I took the technique that I was learning in class and used it to make the cover for a new handmade art journal. This one is a 6"x8" codex bound book and I can't wait to use it!

If you look closely at the cover, you can see that I used the 9x12 stencil in the foundation - it's subtle, but this technique just wouldn't have looked good without all of the texture I got from the stencil showing through the holes on top.

I added a little Inka Gold to really highlight the texture - it's a little hard to work it into the nooks and crannies... I'm probably going to keep playing at getting that just right.

One of my favorite things about using stencils in my work is how they can really be a crucial part of the design without most people even realizing that you used a stencil! I also love the versatility... who would have thought that stencil would work so perfectly with this style?

You can also see where I used the 4x4 stencil to cover the spine of my book - it really was the perfect complement and worked great to tie the covers together into a cohesive whole.

The back cover gave a little nod to my original intentions with these stencils... I love how the flowers from the 6x6 work along the bottom.

A little close-up so you can see how they worked into my collage.

That's it for me this month, thanks Terri for another month of awesome designs! I can't wait to use these some more!

Guest Designer Shelley R. Chavis: Documented Life Project 2016 unPlanner!

Hey Everybody!
I am SUPER thrilled & humbled to be guest designing for StencilGirl Products.
Today, I am sharing my mixed media process for my Week #12 weekly calendar layout for my Documented Life Project 2016 "unPlanner". I will be incorporating three of my favorite StencilGirl Products stencils in my layering process:
Modern Buds (by Rae Missigman)
 Alrightly, let's get started:
1. Started with my "inky" Kate Spade calendar pages for Week #12.

2. Sprayed Dylusions Ink Spray on Traci's Deconstructed Floral Bouquet stencil in a separate grid lined paper pad.

3. Placed my calendar pages on top of the inky stencil to get a negative print.

4. Painted Carolyn's Scribble Scratch Handwriting stencil with black acrylic ink and applied imperfect prints around the border of my calendar pages for texture & interest.

5. Added acrylic paint to my inking palette.

6. Blended the acrylic paint with my brayer.

7. Took a paint print from my inking palette.

8. Sprayed Carolyn's Scribble Scratch Handwriting stencil with black Dylusions ink & added the negative to my background for a graffiti vibe.

9. Painted Rae's Buds stencil with fluorescent pink paint. Printed it on ledger paper.

10. Created collage pieces from Rae's Modern Buds & Traci's Deconstructed Flowers by fussy cutting the stencil shapes with scissors. Glued the collage elements to my background with Uhu glue.

11. Embellished my background with my DIY collage bits, stickers, stamping & black stitching.

Here are all three StencilGirl stencils "in action" in my final Documented Life Project 2016 Week #12 "unPlanner" layout:

January StencilClub Inspiration!

Hi Stencil Lovers!
Janet Here...Wishing you a Happy New Year!
Have you seen Mary Beth Shaw's Private Collection 16.1?

The large stencil reminded me of a wall of shrub bushes or trees.
I let some flowery vines grow up the sides.

This next one is an art journal cover.
I used the smallest stencil and doodled around it...
Added the word 'art' with Carolyn Dube's Vintage Typewriter Stencil.

Next, the last page in my 2015 Documented Life Project.
I used the largest "drippy" stencil in the background layer.
Some of the middle sized 'graffiti' stencil is in the top layers.

I used the numbers from the previous December 2015 StencilClub Stencil.

I hope you enjoy these Private Collection stencils!
See you next month!

Hi! Mary Nasser here
to share what I've been making with the January StencilClub stencils, too!

Inspired by Carla Devine's recent blog post on creating labels for mixed media art journaling,
I had a go at it with this month's stencils!

I used my Gelli Plate and the largest stencil to apply the first layers of acrylic paint.

Then I used The Groove Tool and foam tip with black ink through the medium-sized stencil
to add more layers onto the square labels.

On the round labels, I used my Identi-Pen to doodle around the white shapes I created
by pouncing white acrylic through the mini stencil:

These are the finished label sheets!

And a detailed photo:

You can see the square and circle shaped labels once I removed the remnants.
(And you can bet I'm going to use those remnants in my mixed media art journals, too!)

Below are two more details!

You're really going to love the lines and patterns of these stencils, and all the textures you can create with them!

Last up, this is Gwen with one more project featuring this month's awesome StencilClub collection! These are such fabulous stencils for creating layers in your work... I decided to use them to do just that in a mixed media paint and collage piece.
Here's a little peek at how this came together... I started with a sheet of 11"x14" heavy-weight mixed media paper that had a painted background on it. I collaged some vintage book text on the top, then I stenciled the 6x6 design over and over on a piece of white tissue paper. I collaged that over the book text, then used the 9x12 with some black paint on the bottom (I also used a paint marker to cover the bridges and make it look like solid paint drips.)

Next, I took some sheets of underpaper with lots of paint on them along with more of my stenciled tissue paper. I also stenciled with the 4x4 on some deli paper that had paint on it. I collaged strips of these across the page with gel medium, then used some Frantage chunky gold embossing powder to put a line of gold texture across the middle. I added my Japanese block print and stenciled around him with the 4x4.
I pulled out the November StencilClub stencils to add some words in gold. They say "Story Revealed" and with the iridescent paint, they kind of become invisible in certain light which I thought was pretty cool given the title! I love the look of all of the different layers in this piece, and I hope you're excited for this month's stencils and feeling inspired to use them!
